On December 15, Foxconn announced that it has reached a cooperation agreement with Porotech, a micro LED technology manufacturer, to accelerate the commercialization of micro LED microdisplays for AR.
The collaboration will integrate Foxconn's proprietary technologies in semiconductor chip manufacturing, packaging, IC drivers, CMOS backplanes, module assembly, system assembly, etc., as well as Porotech's proprietary micro LED-on-Silicon (LEDOS), dynamic pixel tuning (DPT), and Gan-on-Silicon platforms. The two companies will eventually work together to produce ultra-high-density, energy-efficient Micro LED microdisplays for AR, wearable, and smart device applications.

With the combination of strong and powerful, the development of micro LED micro display has been accelerated.
At present, Micro LED technology has proven its superior display performance in the field of large size. In the field of microdisplay, although micro LED has inherent theoretical advantages in volume, brightness, resolution, and contrast, the technology industry has great expectations for its application in the field of microdisplay. However, at present, compared with the mainstream technologies such as Micro OLED in the field of micro display, micro LED still has many pain points in technology and cost.
In recent years, driven by a number of micro LED upstream and downstream enterprises, micro LED micro display technology has continuously made breakthroughs, and micro LED has achieved substantial upgrades and changes in the resolution, brightness, mass transfer, and full-color display of micro display.
With the continuous progress of micro LED micro display technology, downstream and terminal enterprises also continue to increase the application of micro LED technology. Taking AR glasses as an example, compared with 2022, the number of AR glasses applying Micro LED microdisplay technology has increased significantly by about 9 this year. End-of-line AR glasses manufacturers have created AR glasses products that are lightweight, fashionable, and have high-brightness display performance through Micro LED monochrome or full-color displays with optical waveguides.
Micro LED microdisplay technology is continuing to develop in the direction of commercialization, and the cooperation between Porotech and Foxconn will undoubtedly elevate the development of Micro LED microdisplay technology to a new height.
As a well-known enterprise in the field of micro LED technology and electronic foundry, the technology integration of Porotech and Foxconn will further expand the application of micro LED micro display technology in AR glasses and wearable devices, and accelerate the process of commercial application.
Specifically, as a Micro LED technology company established only 6 years ago, Porotech continues to improve the performance and production process of GaN-based Micro LED micro-display through its proprietary Micro LED manufacturing technology, and has taken the lead in releasing a number of world-first products, becoming a pioneer in promoting the development of Micro LED micro-display.
In 2020, Porotech launched the world's first commercialized Ingan red micro LED epitaxial productIn 2021, Porotech successfully developed the world's first natural red Ingasn-based Micro LED displayIn April 2022, Porotech exhibited the world's first original Indan-based red, green and blue micro LED displaysIn October 2022, Porotech released the world's first all-in-one full-color Micro LED display.
In 2023, Porotech will set up new factories in the UK and Taiwan, China, to help the company expand its Micro LED business and accelerate the process of technology development.
As a leader in the field of electronic foundry, Foxconn has large-scale electronic product production equipment, rich production experience and technology, and in recent years, it has also improved its production capacity in microdisplays and AR glasses to prepare for the production needs of major customers in the future.
In 2022, Foxconn announced its entry into the metaverse field, planning to incorporate metaverse elements into its product design, such as wearable devices, cloud data centers, micro LED displays, etc., to accelerate the development of metaverse business and launch more VR, MR, and AR related hardware products for its downstream brand customers.
Prior to cooperating with Porotech, Foxconn was involved in the early development and production of several micro LED technology products in the field of micro LED. For example, this year, Foxconn and Yang Ming Jiaotong University have developed a high-color purity Ingan red micro LEDWith Ennostar, we developed a 4 micron pitch of 012 inch blue micro LED micro display.
In the AR glasses production business, in March this year, it was reported that Foxconn plans to acquire Zuo Zhen, an AR glasses ODM solution provider, to further increase the layout of the AR VR business segment.
In terms of AR glasses orders, Foxconn is expected to continue to be favored by large customers in the future. Earlier, Guo Mingchi, an analyst of the fruit chain, posted that Apple's second-generation AR VR headset has two versions, high-end and low-end, and shipments are expected to be about ten times that of the first-generation headset. The second-generation products will be developed and produced by Likai and Hon Hai (Foxconn).
Brief summary. The cooperation between Porotech and Foxconn will undoubtedly benefit the development of the Micro LED industry, and at the same time enhance the technology and capabilities of both parties in the Micro LED micro display business.
Porotech's Micro LED technology accelerates the commercialization process and application, and can provide high-end Micro LED displays for terminal manufacturers in the future. Foxconn has followed a new development route in the metaverse field and accumulated more resources and technologies in the fields of micro LED micro display and AR glasses, laying a more substantial foundation for the future development of key customer business and obtaining more OEM orders for micro display equipment.
