In March 1521, Emperor Zhengde died suddenly in the leopard room at the age of 29. Since Zhengde was the only son without an heir, Empress Dowager Zhang and Yang Tinghe, the first assistant of the cabinet, had to choose an heir from the imperial family.
Zhengde's cousin, 14-year-old Xingwang Zhu Houxuan, soon inherited the title. Unexpectedly, Jiajing was generous and asked Yang Tinghe to kneel, and a group of people who were not subject to judicial restrictions were transferred or punished with canes in order to restore the prestige of the Son of Heaven.
In the three-year struggle, Jiajing and Yang Tinghe fought not for titles, but for power. If you compromise from the beginning, you will undoubtedly become a puppet of Empress Dowager Zhang and Yang Tinghe.
After this incident, Jiajing deeply realized that if he could not firmly control the imperial power in his own hands, if he could not dominate the ministers, he would be subject to them everywhere.
