The Porsche Taycan Turbo S has received a secret software update that is even faster than ever

IT Home reported on December 14 that as we all know, Porsche is not a champion of radical change, and prefers to continue to improve in details. This philosophy is also reflected in its first all-electric sports car, the Taycan Turbo S. Recent independent performance tests have shown that the car is able to reach top speed faster than it was two years ago, an improvement of a second.

According to Car and Driver, the Taycan Turbo S has received a significant boost in acceleration, with even more rapid acceleration in all phases before reaching a top speed of 150 mph (241 km/h). For example, the car did better in the 145 kmh, 193 kmh and 400-metre acceleration races. IT House noticed that in the 400-meter drag race, the result went from 105 seconds 209 km/h increased to 103 seconds 212 km h.

Interestingly, the Taycan Turbo S's 0-60 mph (96 kmh) acceleration time hasn't changed, despite the overall performance improvements. This hints at the key mechanism behind the performance boost – overboost." The so-called overboost is the ability of the motor to output more than the rated power in a short period of time.

Porsche was already aware of the potential of the overboost function when the Taycan was first introduced, but was also aware of the potential damage that could occur to the electric motor with long-term use. Therefore, as a precautionary measure, Porsche has limited the running time of the overboost function to just 3 seconds at a time.

As Porsche gained a better understanding of the Taycan owner's Xi and the durability of the motor over time, their confidence in the motor grew. That's why Porsche has extended the overboost function from the initial 3 seconds to 10 seconds, allowing the driver to get a longer boost of power.

That's why the Taycan Turbo S is faster in all acceleration tests except 60 mph (96 km/h), as the car is already able to accelerate in less than 3 seconds at this stage. As for why Porsche didn't mention it, it's unclear why. Perhaps out of German humility, or perhaps because the improvements were gradually implemented over the course of two updates and two years.

It is worth mentioning that these improvements can only be achieved in Sport Plus mode with the launch function.
