The BIOS (Basic Input and Output System) is a key component of computer boot and hardware initialization. Sometimes, when a computer has boot issues, hardware conflicts, or other unusual conditions, resetting the BIOS can be an effective way to fix the problem. In this post, we will discuss why you need to reset your BIOS and how to do it safely and correctly.
Demo environment: ThinkPad E580, Windows 11
1. Turn off the power. Before performing any BIOS reset operation, make sure to power off your computer and unplug the power plug out of the outlet. BIOS setup information is usually stored in the CMOS battery on the motherboard.
2. Remove the battery. Use your fingers or a gadget to gently remove the CMOS battery. Once the battery is removed, wait about 5-10 minutes to ensure that the storage information in the CMOS chip is completely cleared.
3. Reinsert the battery. Place the battery back in its slot and make sure it is inserted correctly. Reconnect the power supply and start the computer. The BIOS will be reset to the default settings. Find a jumper on your motherboard called the BIOS CLR.
4. Change the jumper setting. Move the jumper from the default position to the clear position. After changing the jumper settings, wait about 5-10 minutes to ensure that the storage information in the CMOS chip is completely cleared.
5. Move the jumper back to the default position. Make sure to revert back to the two pins on the jumper. Reconnect the power supply and start the computer. The BIOS will be reset to the default settings.
1. Before operating the internal components of the computer, make sure to release the static electricity from your body by touching a metal surface or using an anti-static wrist strap. Before resetting the BIOS, record the current BIOS settings.
2. When using the jumper to reset, make sure to accurately move the jumper back to the default position. Incorrect jumper settings can cause startup issues. If the BIOS is reset to unlock the password, make sure you have permission to do it and that there is a way to recover the password.
3. Before performing any operations that may affect system settings, please back up important data in your computer regularly to prevent accidents.
By performing the BIOS reset operation correctly, you can fix BIOS-related issues and improve the stability and performance of your computer. However, use caution to ensure that you understand the risks and precautions before performing any operation involving the motherboard or hardware.
