This article focuses on the conceptual phase of small IPD product development.
The term "small IPD" here refers specifically to the product development process, which is mainly used to distinguish it from the IPD system.
For more information about the IPD system, you can refer to the following diagram:
The concept phase is the first stage of the small IPD process and is also a process from receiving product development tasks to a concept decision review.
The small IPD process is shown in the following figure:
The main significance of the concept phase is to make a quick assessment of the overall attractiveness of the product opportunity and whether it fits with the company's overall strategy.
Among them, the inputs in the concept phase mainly involve the following:
Initial Package Business Plan;
Project Brief;
Preliminary market demand: list of customer needs;
Results of the combinatorial analysis;
Product strategy and signpost planning.
Outputs from the concept phase, involving:
Optimized package business planning;
End-to-end project plan summary;
Package requirements (product definitions, system requirements specifications);
Design requirements, product concepts, and conceptual decision review materials and resolutions.
The main goal of the concept phase is to answer the question "what to do".
Therefore, in the concept phase, you need to analyze the market opportunity and customer needs.
At the same time, it is also necessary to evaluate whether the product opportunity is consistent with the company's product strategy and whether it meets the requirements of the company's business strategy.
The result is a definition of the package requirements and a conceptual approach to meeting the package requirements, including the estimated financial results, reasons for success, and risks.
The process of the concept phase is as follows:
PDT is an abbreviation for Product Development Team.

The preliminary business plan and project plan are key deliverables in the concept phase and are used for the overall control of the project and the project risk analysis.

If the decision is "continue", the project moves to the planning phase;
If the decision is "terminated", disband and terminate the project immediately.
