Yu Wenhua (1921-2014), known as Wei, was born in Suzhou. From an early age, he showed a keen interest in Chinese painting. Under the careful guidance of the two masters, Cai Mill and Zhang Shiyuan, his skills have become more and more sophisticated. In 1948, he became attached to a generation of Chinese painting master Zhang Daqian, and since then he has become Daqian's protégé and is listed in Dafengtang. Yu Wenhua is not only an extraordinary accomplishment in the fields of landscape, flowers and birds, but he is also a highly respected artist and educator. As a member of the Peasants' and Workers' Party, a painter of the Shanghai Academy of Chinese Painting, a librarian of the Shanghai Research Institute of Culture and History, a member of the Shanghai Artists Association, and the president of the Shanghai Dafengtang Calligraphy and Painting Research Association, he has made outstanding contributions to the inheritance and promotion of Chinese culture. Yu Wenhua's landscape paintings are deeply influenced by the Song and Yuan dynasties, and the brush and ink exude a simple and elegant atmosphere. He is adept at using a variety of techniques to depict the magnificence and beauty of landscapes. At the same time, his flower and bird paintings were deeply influenced by the Ming and Qing dynasties, especially the depiction of peonies, which was known as "lush peony". His works have been exhibited internationally many times, showing the charm and style of traditional Chinese art.
