One in five women and girls who are forced to migrate or lose their homes is a victim of gender-based violence. Gender-based violence, especially against women and girls, is one of the most pervasive violations of fundamental rights in the world today. There are about 73.6 billion women, nearly one-third of the total population, have experienced physical or sexual violence from an intimate partner or non-partner at least once in their lifetime, and possibly both.
Displacement provides a breeding ground for gender-based violence, multiplying the vulnerability of women and girls. Conflict and disaster-related chaos, social exclusion, loss of support networks, and poor living and health conditions all increase the risk of gender-based violence against forcibly displaced women and girls.
This unfortunate phenomenon is not just a statistic, but a reality of millions of lives. Women and girls, who are supposed to be the pillars of society, suffer injustice because of their gender. Gender should not be a cause of violence and inequality, we need to work together to create a world free of gender discrimination and violence.
