Recently, with regard to Israel, the United Nations General Assembly adopted an overwhelming resolution calling on Israel to withdraw from the Golan Heights, which is located north-east of Israel and had been Syrian territory until the third Middle East war in 1967, by a vote of 91 to 8. After the partition of Israel in 1948, this highland was located at the junction of Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Palestine and Jordan.
In addition, the first Middle East war that broke out at the same time has actually laid the root cause of the war here, but Israel, which was "besieged" by Arab countries at the beginning, was able to survive and win in the first two Middle East wars, which is already very good, and it has no ability to occupy this feng shui treasure at all. However, Israel, which opened the "explosive" mode in the third Middle East war, quickly occupied the Golan Heights from Syria, which was participating in the war at that time, and obtained this strategic commanding height with an average altitude of 1,000 meters above sea level, which can overlook the entire western Middle East.
At the same time, the occupation of the Golan Heights has given Israel huge resources, and it has even been killed and refused to return them. In fact, in a broad geographical sense, the Golan Heights is 1,800 square kilometers, and Israel occupies more than 1,200 square kilometers of two-thirds of the main one-thirds. The Jordan River, which is connected to it, directly provides Israel with more than 40% of its fresh water, which is even more precious than ** for the Middle East, where water is generally scarce.
What's even more unexpected is that after surveying here, it was also found that there is a large amount of oil, conservatively estimated to be 1.5 billion barrels, and it also has a large number of mineral resources such as copper and iron. Constant attempts to push the Line of Actual Control (LAC) out have led to territorial disputes with Lebanon in the Sheba farms area in the north-western corner of the Golan Heights.
Therefore, the resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly this time not only calls for Israel to withdraw from the Golan Heights, but also urges Israel to return to the track of negotiations with Syria and Lebanon. However, such a resolution can only express the attitude of the international community, but cannot actually force Israel to withdraw, and it is absolutely impossible for Israel to hand over this treasure land, which has multiple resources such as fresh water, oil and minerals.
In the face of Egypt and Syria, which have a large amount of Soviet aid, Israel only took 6 days, not only in the territorial struggle between Palestine and Israel, completely occupied the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, but also further ate the entire Sinai Peninsula and most of the Golan Heights in Egypt.
But since then, with the exception of the Golan Heights, most of these territories have been spit out with the rapprochement between Israel and Egypt and the PLO. Even the Gaza Strip, which is now causing a large-scale Israeli-Palestinian conflict, was occupied by Israel until 2005.
However, the Sinai Peninsula is relatively comparable, and like the Golan Heights, both are themselves parts of the Palestinian-Israeli territorial dispute. Therefore, no matter what Israel says, there is no reason to occupy the territory of other countries for a long time. Thus, in the Fourth Middle East War in 1973, Egypt was defeated like Syria, but it did not recover the Sinai Peninsula as planned. However, in 1978, with the mediation of the United States, Egypt chose to compromise with Israel, normalized Egyptian-Israeli relations, and finally completely recovered all of the Sinai Peninsula in 1982.
For Egypt, it has taken back 6% of the country's territory, but for Israel, it is only a region with an arid climate and a large desert that does not belong to its own country in exchange for an Arab power that is not an enemy of its own, which is naturally very happy to see it. However, Israel is not willing to do this "business" with Syria, on the one hand, because Syria insists on an anti-Israeli and anti-American attitude and vows to regain the lost territory by force. On the other hand, even if Syria is willing to sacrifice some of its interests to negotiate, Israel will not be able to give up the Golan Heights, except for the hard-won water and mineral resources it provides.
More importantly, once this high ground is recaptured by Syria, Israel will face a condescending threat at any time. It is only 60 kilometers away from Damascus, the capital of Syria, but it is also about 60 kilometers away from important cities such as Haifa in northern Israel. Once Syria is able to take advantage of the Golan Heights to capture northern Israel, it will be able to drive south along the plains along the entire western coast of Israel, which is why Israel is most reluctant to give up the occupation of the Golan Heights except for water and resources.
