On November 7, Samuel Haskell, a 35-year-old American man, hired four porters to assist him in removing several black plastic garbage bags from his home.
After an investigation, Samuel's wife, Li Mei, a Chinese woman, and her parents were last seen on November 6. On the day Samuel hired someone to remove the plastic bag, surveillance cameras caught him throwing a large garbage bag into a dumpster near his home, which was also found by witnesses to contain human stumps. Subsequently, Samuel was charged with allegedly killing Li Mei and her parents.

It was previously reported that Li Mei is an immigrant from China, and after she and Samuel registered their marriage in 2015, the two have three children together. According to foreign media reports, Samuel's father is the president of a Hollywood production company, and he is also a director himself. Many netizens found that the films written and directed by Samuel before the crime often featured pornographic and violent elements about Asian women.
