In the early days of the founding of the People's Republic of China, the Chinese Academy of Sciences was established, absorbing some of the practices of the former Soviet Academy of Sciences, but in terms of the academician system, the Chinese Academy of Sciences did not immediately follow the Soviet Union, but established a system of academic departments and academic committee members.
In June 1954, with the approval of the Communist Party of China and the Government Council, the Faculty began to prepare, and in June 1955, the Faculty of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was established and the first meeting of the Faculty members of the Academy. The reason why it is called a member of the department instead of an academician is because considering that the title of academician is very sacred and must have a high academic level, and at that time China's scientific and technological level was still relatively backward, and the development of disciplines was uneven, if in order to make a group of academicians in various disciplines, it would not only be difficult to convince the public, but also have a bad influence in the world, so it was decided to delay the selection and appointment of academicians at the same time, the members of the department are not only an honorary title, but more importantly, they need to undertake the academic leadership of science and technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and even the whole country。
The selection of the first batch of Faculty members is carried out by Division. Among them, the nomination of candidates for the members of the three faculties of the Faculty of Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry, the Faculty of Biology and Geosciences, and the Faculty of Technical Sciences are divided into Geoscience, Zoology and Zoology, Medicine and Basic Medicine, Agriculture and Forestry, Mining and Metallurgy, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Construction (including Geodesy) and Water Conservancy, Machinery, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Mechanics, There are 11 groups of disciplines in physics, and two methods were initially adopted to produce the list of faculty members: in the natural sciences, it was decided to send a letter to relevant experts in the name of Dean Guo Moruo to discuss the recommendation of the faculty members; In the social sciences, on the basis of consulting some social scientists, the director of the department and the academic secretary were entrusted to draw up a preliminary list.
The first batch of faculty members represented the highest academic level in New China at that time, and many of the scientists who were elected as members of the Faculty were the pioneers and founders of various disciplines, and they made indelible and significant contributions to promoting the establishment and development of the modern science and technology system and the cultivation of talents in New China, which deserve to be remembered by history forever.
