The 11th Asian Games held in Beijing in 1990 set up a women's football event for the first time, and as of the 19th Asian Games held in Hangzhou in 2023, the women's football competition of the Asian Games has produced 9 champions, with the Chinese team, the North Korean team, and the Japanese team winning 3 times each.
In the 80s of the last century, the sport of women's football developed rapidly around the world, and FIFA decided to hold the first World Women's Football Championship in Guangdong, China in 1991 (note: later renamed the Women's World Cup). The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) decided to add a women's football event to the 1990 Asian Games. At that time, the Chinese women's football team had already shown outstanding strength in the Asian Women's Football Championship, and the Chinese women's football team once again won the top Asian championship in the Beijing Asian Games. In the 1994 and 1998 Asian Games, the Chinese women's football team successfully defended its title and achieved three consecutive championships.
In the mid-to-late 90s of the last century, the North Korean women's football team began to pose a threat to the Chinese women's football team, and the team was characterized by a tenacious style and a balanced offensive and defensive style. In the 14th Asian Games held in Busan, South Korea in 2002, the North Korean women's football team replaced the Chinese team as the new hegemon of the women's football field in the Asian Games. In 2006, the DPRK women's football team won the championship in the 15th Asian Games. At the 17th Asian Games held in Incheon, South Korea in 2014, the North Korean team won the women's football field for the third time.
Japan is the third team to win the Asian Games in history. At the 16th Asian Games held in Guangzhou in 2010, the Japanese women's football team, which is particular about technology and tactics, defeated the North Korean team in the final and made the Asian Games championship podium for the first time. In the last two Asian Games, the Japanese team has won the championship.
