Dr. Akira Yoshino, Emeritus Researcher at Asahi Kasei, has been selected as the Grand Prize of the 2023 VinFuture Award for his contribution to the invention of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs).

Dr. Yoshino invented a new combination of carbon for the anode and licoo2 (lithium cobalt oxide) for the cathode, developed the basic technology for a lib using aluminum as a positive collector material, and manufactured the world's first Lib battery. He has also developed other technologies that are critical to the successful commercialization of LIB, including the technology for manufacturing electrodes, the technology for assembling batteries, and other technologies that make LIB a small, lightweight rechargeable battery.

Dr. Akira Yoshino, Asahi Kasei Researcher Emeritus, commented, "I am truly honored to receive this prestigious award. The lithium-ion battery I invented not only makes mobile IT possible for society as a whole, but now also makes it possible for the future to be sustainable.

LIBs will play an increasingly important role in the efficient and effective use of renewable energy for transportation and many other applications. ”

Established in 2020 by the Vietnam VinFuture** Association, the VinFuture Awards recognize outstanding inventors and researchers from academic institutions, research centers, and industrial sectors around the world. It is dedicated to celebrating groundbreaking scientific research and technological innovations that have made a significant and positive difference in the daily lives of many people.

LIBs have greatly contributed to the widespread adoption of mobile information and communication devices around the world. Currently, it is increasingly being used in electric vehicles and energy storage systems that support the world's sustainability.

The VinFuture Awards 2023 ceremony was held on December 20, 2023 in Hanoi, Vietnam.
