TSMC production capacity is full? SMIC also did not expect that the reversal would come so quickly

As a giant among global chip foundries, TSMC has always occupied a very important position in the industry. Due to the family foundation accumulated over the years, TSMC has also been in the limelight in the competition in recent years. Just when everyone thought that TSMC was going to run smoothly all the way, TSMC encountered obstacles one after another.

According to a report by Taiwan** on February 23, Taiwan's technology industry has been sluggish recently, and a college graduate from a university in Taiwan submitted his resume to TSMC 10 times in a row during the application season, but TSMC did not reply once.

After asking netizens to post their experiences on the Internet, it caused a lot of discussion. Some industry insiders claim that the main reason is that the development is not very good now, and naturally there is no need to recruit people. There are quite a few people with very bright resumes, and they are still not invited.

From this small thing, it seems that TSMC has encountered some problems recently. For example, TSMC originally planned to build factories in the United States and Japan, but there has been bad news from the United States and Japan recently.

Biden claimed to spend $52 billion on subsidies for semiconductor manufacturers to build factories in the United States, a move that attracted countless semiconductor manufacturers to build factories in the United States, including industry giants such as Samsung and TSMC. However, even after Samsung and TSMC went to the United States to build factories, the subsidy funds promised by the United States have not arrived for a long time, resulting in slow progress and repeated delays.

But on the contrary, Intel has received subsidies from the United States, which has to make people wonder if there is a shady scene inside. In this regard, Liu Deyin, chairman of TSMC, can only helplessly say: The company's overseas decision-making needs to be decided according to local incentives and customer needs.

In addition to the United States, even Japan is in trouble. TSMC's construction of a factory in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, is supposed to be a good thing for the local economy, but local residents have mixed feelings about it. Because they believe that TSMC has also brought a lot of problems after the construction of the factory, such as traffic congestion, land loss and environmental pollution. The factory is located in a small agricultural town, and the people of the town find it difficult to afford.

In this way, who would have imagined that TSMC was still proud of its development momentum not long ago. Although due to the ban on chip exports, TSMC has lost Huawei, a major customer. But TSMC still coped with the past and took the lead in announcing that it already had a 3nm process.

Moreover, at the beginning of 2024, TSMC won several large orders, and companies such as Intel, Apple and Nvidia have successively reached transaction orders with TSMC, ushering in a good start. In this year, TSMC's 3 5nm high-end chips have been fully booked, and the monthly production capacity has exceeded 100,000 wafers, a year-on-year increase of 200%.

But in this way, TSMC, which has full production capacity, is still full of problems, which shows that it is really difficult to be treacherous in business development. Even if TSMC's current transaction data is so good, they can't be careless, after all, there is an old rival Samsung Electronics on the sidelines.

For example, Preferred Networks Inc., a Japanese company that was originally an old customer of TSMC(PFN), just in 2024, chose to kick the cooperation between TSMC and Samsung Electronics, and the two sides reached a contract for 2nm AI chips. From this point of view, it proves that PFN has recognized Samsung Electronics' 2nm AI chip technology more so far.

In addition to South Korea's Samsung Electronics, SMIC in our mainland is also very strong, spending 170 billion yuan to build four wafer factories at once, and now their monthly production capacity has reached 1400 million chips. In addition, the demand for domestic substitution in the Chinese market is getting higher and higher, so SMIC will also have a very broad domestic order.

You must know that China's semiconductor market occupies 1 3 of the world, and it can be said that as long as the Chinese market is willing, it can directly feed any chip manufacturer into a world giant. Therefore, it is foreseeable that SMIC will become a strong competitor to TSMC and Samsung Electronics in the future.

In addition to them, Huawei's chips are naturally also making breakthroughs, and Huawei, the world's most popular AI chip, has also made breakthroughs. For example, in 2023, Huawei will launch the AI chip of Ascend 910B, and its comprehensive computing power is almost the same as NVIDIA's A100. This made Huang can't help but feel a sense of crisis: Huawei may be a strong opponent of Nvidia in the future.

In the end, who can become the final winner in this battle, I believe that domestic enterprises will have the ability to cope with this situation, we can wait and see.
