The floor usually does not smell before mopping. However, after mopping the floor, there is a fishy smell. The problem can be in three areas: mops, floor tiles, and water quality.

Unless the water used for mopping is untreated, or is stored in the home, it can contain a lot of bacteria and mold. As a result, these bacteria and mold can be passed on to the floor every time you mop the floor, causing odors. If you can ensure that there is no problem with the water quality, then the problem may be with the mop. Many household mops are usually slightly wrung out and placed in the corner of the bathroom after use. Considering the high humidity of the bathroom itself, the mop will inevitably become stale when it is dried naturally in a humid environment. If you use an odorous mop to mop the floor, bacteria can accumulate in it. Even if the floor is mopped frequently, it will leave an unpleasant fishy smell.
Even if you use a mop with a good drying effect such as sponge fiber instead of a cotton mop, you can ensure that the mop is dry and clean every time you mop the floor. However, sometimes you can still smell the unpleasant smell coming from the floor after mopping. So why is that?

According to different materials, ceramic tiles can be divided into clay tiles, stone tiles and other types. Normally, tiles that meet factory requirements will not produce odor and other problems. These sulfides can accumulate inside the tiles, and when the mop mops the floor, moisture mixes with these sulfides, which can create an unpleasant odor.
For tiles fired at medium and low temperatures, the overall density of the tiles is not enough due to insufficient firing time or low firing temperature. When the floor is mopped, the water seeping into the tiles mixes with the clay and can breed fungi and bacteria, including a class of prokaryotes called actinomycetes, which produce an earthy smell when in contact with water. On the other hand, tiles that have been fired at high temperatures are completely porcelain, so there is no odor caused by clay even after mopping with a wet rag.
Due to the peculiarity of the location of kitchen and bathroom tiles, they are more prone to dirt, so it is difficult to completely clean them when mopping the floor. Kitchens often handle ingredients, and it is inevitable that crumbs will fall on the floor, especially some meat products can breed a lot of bacteria and fungi after rotting on the ground, giving off an unpleasant smell. If the floor is not thoroughly cleaned every time it is mopped, these bacteria and fungi will become the most intractable problem.
What should we do to avoid a fishy smell when mopping the floor?
