GUANGZHOU, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- The guardian of the radio waves in the mountains behind the speeding train.

Xinhua News Agency reporter Wu Tao.

Guangdong Dayao Mountain, located in the Nanling Mountains that stretch for thousands of miles, spans north and south. The 44 Dayao Mountain tunnels that pass through the deep mountains and have a total length of 25 kilometers are the "throat places" of the Beijing-Guangzhou Railway and the Beijing-Guangzhou High-speed Railway. During the Spring Festival, an average of 486 trains pass through the Dayao Mountain Tunnel Group every day, and more than 40 million passengers pass through the area. At its peak, there were 603 trains passing through each day, an average of less than 3 minutes.

From 1 a.m. to 4 a.m., a group of people made their way through the bitterly cold mountains and worked intensely in the dark tunnels, ensuring that the communication waves guided the speeding trains north and south. During the Spring Festival, the reporter interviewed this group of guardians.

Race against time: the "marathon runners" of the Dayao Mountain tunnel group

Due to the need for trains to pass during the day, the equipment in the Dayao Mountain Tunnel can only be overhauled and maintained during the "skylight period" when the operation is suspended at night. It is usually between 1 and 4 a.m., and it is even more tense during the Spring Festival.

Every time we overhaul, it's a race against time. Lei Jinwen, foreman of the Shaoguan Communication Work Area of the Guangzhou South High-speed Railway Communication Workshop of the Guangzhou Railway Group, said that because it takes a lot of time to enter and exit the tunnel, the time left for workers to repair and operate is not sufficient.

Last year, the laying of a communication optical cable in the No. 1 tunnel of Dayao Mountain was the most memorable of Lei Jinwen's work for more than 10 years.

With a total length of nearly 11 kilometers, Tunnel 1 is the longest single tunnel in Dayao Mountain. At that time, the "skylight period" available for work was five hours, but it took nearly half of the time to prepare personnel, equipment and materials to the work site. After overcoming the difficulties and completing the construction, there was not much time left to evacuate, and everyone began to run all the way with equipment and tools.

It's easy to run a few kilometers, but it's hard to run in the middle of the night with heavy loads. Lei Jinwen said that fortunately, there was a "marathon runner" Li Qiang in the team at that time to run back and forth to "plug the leak", and finally evacuated safely before the end of the time.

Li Qiang has been retired from the army and joined the Guangzhou Railway Group for 15 years, and has always maintained the habit of running in the morning, and has participated in marathons many times. He said: "The communication signal directly affects the safety of the operation of high-speed rail trains, and ensuring the normal operation of the tunnel signal is a marathon for many years." We are all marathon runners, in a race against time, against safety. ”

Fight against snow and ice: Hold the battery in your arms and turn it on.

The rainy and snowy weather brings many challenges to the Spring Festival.

The tunnel is too long for all the wireless signals emitted by external signal equipment to cover, so 22 railway communication repeaters and 1,120 public network equipment have been added to the tunnel. Xu Shuai, secretary of the general party branch of the communication workshop of Guangzhou South High-speed Railway, said.

When Lei Jinwen and his workers were eating, a command came from the work mobile phone: "The transmission power of the communication base station 14 is abnormal alarm, please overhaul it quickly."

Everyone hurriedly took a few bites of food and rushed to the base station site, but after some testing, they were never able to find the problem.

Lei Jinwen invited Zhang Dingxin, who has participated in the Spring Festival transportation for more than 30 years, and he has experienced the process of China's railways from internal combustion engines to electrification to high-speed rail era.

I don't see it like a problem with the base station itself, you can check the top antenna of the tower. Lao Zhang squinted his eyes and stared at the radio spectrogram for a while.

Lin Bowen, a communications worker, climbed the communication tower, and sure enough, long ice strips were hung under the antenna, and the antenna angle changed slightly.

However, when the ice was cleared and I was about to contact the network management department to readjust the antenna angle, the working mobile phone automatically shut down due to the low temperature and battery power loss.

Lin Bowen, who was in a hurry, pulled out the battery and stuffed it into his arms, and then put it back five minutes later, and the phone turned on. Taking advantage of this hard-won short time, Lin Bowen completed the verification of the transmission power with the network management, fine-tuned the pitch angle of the antenna, and checked the spectral waveform parameters with Lei Jinwen under the tower, successfully eliminating the abnormality.

Shaoguan Communication Work Area has ensured that the communication equipment in the Dayao Mountain Tunnel Group is normal and there are no traffic accidents for nearly ten years. Xu Shuai said.

"Fighting" with fear of heights: the "tuner" at the spire plays the "peace song".

The communication signals along the high-speed rail are mainly transmitted and received by the communication base station tower antenna and the cables in the tunnel. To become a member of the communication team of the Dayao Mountain Tunnel Group and climb the tower up to 50 meters high, you must have a work at height certificate.

What is surprising is that Lin Bowen once had a "fear of heights". He said: "I don't like sports, and my legs are a little shaky when I climb a stool to change a light bulb. ”

Due to work needs, Lin Bowen took the work-at-height certificate the year before last. When taking the exam hanging items, Lin Bowen's legs trembled in panic. The teacher of the training covered Lin Bowen's eyes with his hands and jokingly asked: "Now that it is pitch black in front of you, do you feel like you are suspended in outer space?" After many trainings, Lin Bowen overcame his fear of heights.

Now, whenever I feel tired halfway through the climb and can't hold it anymore, I close my eyes for a second or two, then take a deep breath and open them again. Not only is there no longer fear, but there is also a sense of enjoyment floating in outer space. Lin Bowen said.

We're a bunch of spire tuners. Lei Jinwen said that the triangular signal tower resembles an electric guitar, the cables are like the strings of a guitar, and the radio signal is like a moving piece of music, penetrating time and space on a specific channel with a special frequency. The communicator is like the "tuner" of the instrument.

Our efforts are only to carefully maintain this 'instrument', produce accurate syllables, and play the 'peace song'. Lei Jinwen said. (ENDS).
