Smartwatches and fitness bands can have a negative impact on sports performance

The foreign publication Medical Xpress analyzed the results of two scientific studies and concluded that buying a smartwatch or fitness tracker does not contribute to the motivation to exercise. Conversely, wearables can lead to a decrease in the user's activity level and engagement.

A 2022 study found that the use of fitness gadgets led to a decrease in activity and enthusiasm in most athletes.

The second study, in 2016, included two groups of overweight adults, tracking diet and exercise. The first group uses a smartwatch to record the activity, while the second group records it on its own. The results showed that participants who used gadgets lost almost no weight over two years, while those who did not use watches and bracelets lost even more.

Scientists explain this effect by the fact that gadgets can create the illusion that the outcome of movement depends on the device, and not on the user's behavior. As a result of the purchase of such equipment, a person may begin to think that his success in sports depends on the gadget, and not on his own efforts.

Additionally, wearable device owners often focus on achieving pre-set goals to meet the needs of the device rather than exercising for their health. In turn, these devices can begin to give negative cues and reminders of unfinished tasks, which researchers believe can lead to a drop in motivation and cessation of exercise.
