Legion Y7000P Review The main force is here, and the main force is back!

Mondo Digital Updated on 2024-02-01

In Lenovo's first press conference in 2024, the new generation Y7000P of the Rescuer can be described as the absolute protagonist, occupying most of the space of the press conference, which shows that the product power of this notebook is quite strong.

Of course, the Y7000P is positioned as the workhorse in the product line of the Legion gaming notebook. However, looking back on the previous generation, its reputation is not ideal. The reason for this is that the price is comparable to that of the competition, and the characteristics of high-performance release have not been continued.

Because of this, taking advantage of Intel's launch of the Core 14th generation HX series mobile processors, Lenovo is the first to launch the whole series, and put a new mold on the Rescuer Y7000P, in terms of heat dissipation, interface, texture, etc., so that this main product will become the main force again.

The new mold used in the Legion Y7000P makes quite bold design changes that significantly improve heat dissipation.

Compared with the previous mold, which designed the air outlets on both sides of the fuselage, the new generation Legion Y7000P is designed with three air outlets on the thickness of the fuselage, of which the air outlets on the left and right sides are arranged with heat dissipation fins. This design makes the inhaled air mainly direct blowing fins during actual operation, supplemented by direct blowing heat source (there is an air outlet on the side of the fan).

Lenovo refers to this new design as an "inward blow", and the next-generation Legion Y7000P is the first notebook to feature this design.

In parallel with the redesign of the air ducts, the new generation of the Legion Y7000P also replaces the fins from the previous generation of aluminum to copper. The heat pipes are also higher in size than the previous generation, with 3 main heat pipes running through the heat dissipation fins and core heat sources on both sides, one of which is also black and thick, (i.e., more heat dissipation).

The thickness of the body of the whole machine has increased slightly by 1 2mm compared with the previous generation, which has little impact. The three air vents on the rear of the fuselage are inlaid with decorative panels, and the Legion Y7000P also comes standard in black and blue for players to choose from.

With a new mold design to greatly improve heat dissipation efficiency, the Legion Y7000P also adjusts the number and distribution of IO interfaces in due course. Compared with the previous generation of 2A2C, the new generation of Legion Y7000P has a new USB-A port, which provides a total of 3 USB-A ports and 2 USB-C ports.

Among them, the USB-A port located on the side of the fuselage desk supports shutdown charging, and the two USB-C ports support 140W private charging protocol and 100W PD charging protocol respectively, which can still work normally when paired with the corresponding charger to meet the needs of different applicable scenarios.

In addition, the Legion Y7000P also offers an HDMI interface, 3There is a 5mm headphone jack and a microSD card reader, and there is also a folding RJ45 or Ethernet port. A closer look also reveals that the distance between each interface (especially on the left side of the fuselage) is still ......Quite far away, the two USB-A ports on the right side of the fuselage are deliberately designed in the lower position to avoid the impact on the mouse.

Of course, 4WHAT still wants to complain,That is, a notebook with a starting price of more than 7000 yuan is still a gaming notebook,Rescuer Y7000P does not give a thunderbolt port,It's really a little sad。 You know, a few minutes before the press conference, Intel China's bigwigs were still talking about how powerful the Thunderbolt 5 is......

In terms of the rest of the details, all versions of the Legion Y7000P feature a 16-inch IPS screen with 2560*1600 resolution, 165Hz refresh rate, 16:10 ratio, 100% SRGB color gamut, 3ms response time, support for Dolby Vision, and X Rite color management, and maintain 350nit screen brightness as before.

By the way, the Legion Y7000P is also designed with two RAM slots and two SSD bays. And the memory is a single 16G DDR5 5600, (compared to the previous preference for 8+8) gamers can easily and relatively inexpensively upgrade. The latter means that both hard drive bays are 2280 specifications, which is also convenient for gamers to upgrade and expand.

With a new mold design, it is the "surface work" of the new generation of Legion Y7000P. Better IO design, friendlier upgrade possibilities, and stronger thermal design are all for "internal power", that is, the first series to be equipped with Intel Core 14th Gen HX processors.

Intel Core 14th Gen HX processors look like they have an extra "X" from H-series processors, but these two series are not of the same origin. The former can be seen as a desktop-class processor crammed into a notebook, with a much higher number of cores, running frequency, etc.

In addition, Intel Core 14th Gen HX processors support overclocking, which puts forward very high requirements for the thermal performance and power supply capacity of the notebook. So the Legion Y7000P is very bold and offers two processor configurations, one is an i7 and the other is also an i7, both of which are Intel Core 14th Gen HX processors anyway.

But there are still some differences between the two i7s, the 14th generation Intel Core i7 processor-14650HX uses 8P+8E cores, and the high-end version is the 14th generation Intel Core i7 processor-14700HX uses 8P+12E cores, and its maximum boost frequency is also 03GHz of difference.

The 4WHAT review uses the Legion Y7000P is equipped with a 14th Gen Intel Core i7 processor-14700HX, which can be seen as a desktop processor 14700K crammed into a laptop in the truest sense of the word.

Of course, for game users, the 14th Gen Intel Core i7 processor-14650HX version is undoubtedly more cost-effective, after all, because of the current performance of mobile GPUs, the bottleneck of most games is on the GPU. However, the 14th Gen Intel Core i7 processor-14700HX is also cost-effective, because the difference between the two versions of the Legion Y7000P with different processors is only 300 yuan.

Definitely thanks to the improved cooling performance brought by the new mold design, the 14th Gen Intel Core i7 processor-14700HX equipped with the Legion Y7000P can reach 110W, and the graphics card, i.e. RTX 4060, can reach 140W.

At 20 room temperatures, the Legion Y7000P double-cop for 20 minutes in the most aggressive "super" mode, and the power peak of the CPU+GPU once exceeded 200W, stabilizing at 190W. At this time, the CPU package power will repeatedly jump horizontally between 65W and 95W, and the temperature will fluctuate between 80 and 90, and the GPU power will be 115W, and the temperature will be 76.

And that's not all, Lenovo has also stuffed some sensors into the body of the Legion Y7000P to make it gesture-aware. If the Legion Y7000P feels the rear of the fuselage being cushioned, then the dual-copy power will be further liberated to 95W+115W, and the power of the whole machine will be up to 220W. At this time, the temperature can be maintained at 90 +75, which is enough to show the power of this heat dissipation system of the new mold design.

However, it should be noted that in the case of "padding", the power of the whole machine of the Legion Y7000P exceeds the power supply limit of the standard adapter, which is 230W, so in this case, it will draw power from the battery to make up for the gap, and there will be a power failure.

Of course, the performance is extremely unleashed, and 4what recommends that the "Ultra Mode" be used at home and with headphones. Because the Legion Y7000P fan tuning in this mode is quite aggressive, as long as the system is slightly loaded, then the fan will go all out to eliminate the heat, and there will be quite noticeable noise.

However, it is not a big problem, the Legion Y7000P supports multiple mode switching, and the "beast mode" that comes standard at the factory is already sufficient. In this mode, the power of the whole machine is 55W+115W, which is absolutely sufficient for both pure CPU computing scenarios and gaming scenarios. The fan speed in this mode goes up to 4500rpm, which is much lower than the 5600rpm in Ultra mode, and the overall noise level is much lower than in Ultra mode.

In summary, the Legion Y7000P adopts the new mold to achieve quite strong heat dissipation, and the performance of the 14th Gen Intel Core i7 processor-14700HX is also strong.

This brings the new generation of Legion Y7000P back to class-leading performance and cooling. The powerful heat dissipation capability ensures the top level of performance release, and when it is about to warm up, it can save users from the risk of overheating and continue to release the performance of the processor elegantly.

As for gaming, the performance of the Legion Y7000P in large 3D games is a regular operation, because the frame rate of the current game mainly depends on the graphics card, and the 40 series graphics cards are relatively less likely to eat the upper limit of power consumption, so the performance of the RTX 4060 laptop is the same as the actual performance.

However, in games that require CPU computing power, the Legion Y7000P's excellent cooling capacity and performance release will be a blessing for performance. After all, the RTX 4060 has about 100 watts of power at full load in most games, and the whole machine still has enough power to make the 14th Gen Intel Core i7 processor-14700HX run higher performance.

And unlike before, when the game was detected, the power was tilted to the GPU without brains, this time the Legion Y7000P has a higher performance release ceiling, and the power allocation strategy is also smarter.

This is especially true in CPU-focused games, such as business simulations or real-time strategy games. In the case of the Urban Skylines series, for example, the Legion Y7000P is capable of being simulated at a significant speed in Gen 2.

With the game set to emulation speed priority, medium quality, and dynamic resolution turned off, the Legion Y7000P simulates a 16 in Urban Skylines 2A city of 30,000 people, 3x speed simulation in 1 hour in the game takes 7146 seconds, the average frame rate of the game in this hour is 24fps. This simulation ability is quite good for a notebook, you must know that the desktop i7-14700K, which can eat power consumption casually, will simulate for about 55 seconds for 1 hour under the same circumstances.

During the game, the CPU and GPU power of the Legion Y7000 are both around 95W (Super Mode), and neither of them has hit the power wall, which shows that the performance scheduling strategy upgrade mentioned by Lenovo at the press conference is indeed effective and effective.

In the past 2023, the product lineup and market strategy of the Rescuer seem to make us feel that it is mainly promoting high-end products such as 9000p, which makes the 7000p, which is positioned as the mainstream and the main sales force, seem relatively average in terms of ** degree, attention and product power. After all, when you compare yourself with your brothers who have a higher position, it is impossible not to bow down.

At the first launch event in 2024, Lenovo devotes quite a bit of space to introducing the Legion Y7000P. Illustrate the improved heat dissipation efficiency brought by the new mold design, stronger, more aggressive, and smarter performance release and scheduling strategies, the built-in sensor realization is a posture-aware super energy mode, and the first series is equipped with a 14th Gen Intel Core i7 processor-14700HX.

It is indeed because of these features that the performance, heat dissipation, and experience of the Y7000P have reached new heights. And the workmanship and scalability of the new mold are also good, and the traditional advantages of the savior such as keyboard and trackpad are still maintained. In terms of performance and basic experience, the Legion Y7000P is indeed the benchmark among notebooks of its class, and this laptop, which is supposed to be the workhorse, is back to its rightful place.
