Doctorate - the name of the highest level of degree, obtaining a doctorate means that a person has the ability to move from the study stage to the academic stage, and the most essential characteristic of a person with a doctorate degree is the ability to be able to create original theoretical results. This is also the most basic training goal of our doctoral students, so that they can become academic talents!
Once upon a time, a person who studied for a Ph.D. was like having a halo on his head, and there were so few such people that you couldn't even see them.
When I was young, there were 3,000 people in our village, and there was only one doctor in the history of our village. At that time, my father often used him as an example and taught me to study hard. Indeed, in that era 20 years ago, there were really few doctors, not to mention doctors, and there were very few graduate students in a village.
In 1983, China trained the first batch of doctors, only 18 people. By 2007, there were 240,000 PhDs. In the past 24 years, an average of about 10,000 doctors have been trained every year. Indeed, our village is quite good, there is one doctor among 3,000 people, and according to the average, only two villages the size of our village can produce a doctorate!
At that time, talents were really scarce, including college students and masters, and it was also a great thing for someone to have a college student. It means that you will rush out of the countryside, get ahead, and have a decent job, who is not envious in the countryside!
With the continuous expansion of undergraduate enrollment, the employment situation of college students is becoming more and more intense, and the enrollment of master's students is also expanding. Since 2015, the number of doctoral students has also begun to increase and increase significantly, and when I graduated with a master's degree, 8 of the 28 people in our major went straight to the doctorate. By 2022, the annual number of doctoral students in China will reach 1390,000 people, and at present, the cumulative number of doctors has reached more than 1 million.
The expansion of doctoral enrollment has doubled, and there are more and more doctoral graduates, and once upon a time, there were very few doctors, and the employment situation is not optimistic!
A few years ago, it was reported that many doctoral graduates went to interview for some high school teaching positions, and they thought it was strange at the time, but now it seems that it has become a common phenomenon for doctoral students to take the civil service and career editors, and to become teachers in primary and secondary schools.
Why is that? After reading for so many years, many people have already passed the age of their doctoral graduation, and they still have to compete with newly graduated undergraduates for jobs! Doctoral employment is also like this?
In my opinion, there are three reasons for this problem.
First, the number of PhDs has increased exponentially.
With the continuous expansion of doctoral enrollment in recent years, especially the implementation of the professional doctoral enrollment policy, it is no surprise that you see doctoral students again, coupled with personal preferences, or career planning, as well as the attraction of talent introduction policies in various units or regions, resulting in doctoral students facing employment pressure have also lowered their identities to join the competition.
Second, the enrollment threshold has been lowered, and the gold content of doctoral degrees has been reduced.
Nowadays, most of the PhDs are application-assessment system, which is much easier than the exam, contact the teacher, the teacher has a quota, and you may be able to study for a PhD! Some students are obsessed with doctorates, some students are avoiding employment, some people are blindly following the trend, and they all go to study for a doctorate, and there are many of these people who have graduated from mixed schools, maybe he is not interested in the research direction he is engaged in, and he does not want to engage in academic work anymore, so he abandons his academic career and goes to another field, in this field that you are not familiar with, you are also a newcomer, so you have to compete with others, except for academic qualifications, you have no advantage!
Third, jobs are limited and social digestion is insufficient.
Initially, because of the limited number of doctors, the society is in short supply, one is universities, the other is research institutes, but these jobs are limited, with more and more doctoral graduates, the competition is becoming more and more fierce, employers also have corresponding thresholds, you do not meet the requirements, even if you are a doctor, you can not enter. In the social enterprises, in fact, there are very few positions that require a doctorate, and graduate or undergraduate students are enough, so why do you have to have a doctorate, so the doctor has to reduce the value of the job to compete!
So should the doctor enter the system?
In my opinion, it can be divided into three categories:
The first type is a solid family and does not need to worry too much about salary. This kind of choice is because after all, you don't have to rely on you to support your family, the family already has a certain foundation, and you can choose your favorite career.
The second category, there is no clear goal and pursuit, this kind of person can do anything, just have a job to mix, and there is no big ambition or pursuit. I don't know what I'm suitable for and what I want to do, this kind of person has a stable job, after all, he doesn't have to worry about food and clothing.
The third category is that the family conditions are not good or average, and they need to work their own, to support their families, and to change their lives.
I don't recommend taking the exam for this kind of person, after all, the work in the system has little to do with your professional learning over the years, and you have to put down your studies when you enter the system, and you can't pick it up if you want to engage in the industry again after a few years. There are very few opportunities for advancement in the system, and job promotion has little to do with your academic level and academic qualifications, and a doctoral degree has little to do with your promotion, and a doctoral degree has almost no advantages! After graduating with a doctorate and entering the system, you may be nearly 10 years older than the undergraduate students, and age becomes your disadvantage! Moreover, the salary level in the system is average, for doctors who want to support their families, create a life, and have academic qualifications, knowledge, and professional ability, it is better to shine in the field they are good at, and the income will be higher!
What do you think about the topic of PhDs entering the system?
