USGBC Speaks Out:

Earlier this month, the USGBC released its 2023 list of the world's top 10 LEED markets, which ranked China once again at the top of the list based on the total area of newly LEED-certified commercial buildings that year. The USGBC annually counts the performance of key markets using the LEED green building and city rating system, which recognizes 10 countries and regions outside the United States that have made significant progress in the design, construction and operation of healthy, green and sustainable buildings, and China has been ranked first for eight consecutive years.

Other countries and regions on the list include Canada, India, Turkey, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Italy, South Korea and Mexico. Since its inception in 1998, LEED has provided a framework for healthy, efficient and cost-effective green buildings, and has been widely used for its universality, rigor and transparency, and is now used in 180+ countries and territories around the world.

China has topped the list for 8 consecutive years and is the strongest growing market for LEED in the world, and according to the just-released 2023 LEED China Year-End Summary, we can gain insight into the performance and development trends of China's green buildings.

In 2023, China's LEED market will rise across the board

By the end of 2023, there were more than 11,900 LEED-registered projects in China, with a total area of more than 4500 million square meters. Among them, the total number of LEED-certified projects has reached 7,119, and the total certified area has exceeded 1700 million square meters.

Compared to 2022, LEED has achieved an overall increase in both registered and certified programs in China: 2,627 new LEED registered projects nationwide in 2023, a year-on-year increase of 5563%;The newly registered area has reached nearly 60 million square meters, an increase of 77% compared with 202224%;China (including the mainland, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Macau markets) added 1,682 LEED certification programs in 2023, an increase of 40 percent from 202240%, and the newly certified area also increased by nearly 50% year-on-year.

In 2023, China's LEED market will rise across the board

On our way to becoming the world's second largest market for LEED applications, we are also exploring the key drivers and areas of involvement. "Hundreds of people are competing in growth" is the best illustration of LEED's development in China in 2023.

The rapid development of the green ** chain has driven the rapid growth of LEED factories and warehouses

In 2023, these two important building spaces that also belong to the ** chain stand out among the top 5 LEED participating space types in China.

In 2023, nearly 500 warehousing and logistics projects will be newly registered for LEED, an increase of 117 compared with 202286%, and nearly 300 new LEED-certified warehousing and logistics projects in 2023, a six-fold increase from 2022. Among them, Mapletree, Wanwei, Dragondi, LaSalle, GLP, Dongjiu Xinyi, Lingzhi China, Gaw Capital Partners, e-Shang, Brookfield & Orange Union are the major players.

In 2023, there was a 98% increase in LEED-registered industrial manufacturing projects compared to 2022. Among them, because the LEED certification of factory projects mostly comes from the requirements of the enterprise itself for the green ** chain, the participants are more complicated. It is worth noting that in addition to the continuous use of some multinational companies, some local companies have also joined in, such as State Grid, NIO, Esquel Group, Weigang Dairy, Changxin Storage, etc.

LEED has seen significant growth in more space types in China

In addition, LEED is suitable for the entire life cycle of buildings and cities, including construction, design, and operation, and can provide a design and operation framework for creating healthy, cost-effective, and efficient green spaces for almost all building types, including residences, office buildings, factories, warehouses, data centers, and retail.

In China, we are also seeing the rapid development of LEED in multiple space types, such as the increasing number of LEED-certified public venues, with more than 80 LEED-certified public venues distributed in 29 cities, and covering spaces for all ages, from libraries to museums to playgrounds.

In recent years, the hotel industry has also begun to contribute to reducing its carbon footprint. In 2023, the number of LEED-registered hotel projects in China increased by 100% compared to 2022.

In the retail sector, the number of LEED-registered retail projects in China is close to that of office projects, accounting for 3426%。The development of LEED retail in China has also shown a trend of multi-line parallelism, such as the luxury industry becoming the "greenest" retail category; McDonald's China is the largest player in green retail in China, with more than 2,500 companies officially certified under the framework of LEED Volume batch certification; In 2023, we're seeing more and more retail brands embracing LEED for the first time, breathing new energy into their flagship stores or other operating spaces. For example, Avada's first store in Chinese mainland, Qiantan Taikoo Li store, has obtained LEED platinum certification; The retail brand ALDI has also achieved LEED certification for its Shanghai Suhewan Vientiane World store, becoming its first LEED-certified store in China. L'Oréal was the first in the world to be located in Shanghai and obtained LEED Gold certification; Local sports brand Anta's Bloomage Live** in Beijing has also completed LEED certification, becoming the brand's first LEED-certified store ......

LEED Net Zero, LEED Cities and Communities are breaking through

In 2023, there will be nearly 40 LEED net-zero registered projects and nearly 30 certified projects in China, including the McDonald's brand Taihe Plaza store in Hong Kong and Shougang Park Qunming Lake drive-thru restaurant, 3 office buildings in Jing'an Kerry Center, Yushan Financial Building in Taipei, Fu Lei Library in Shanghai, and Building 4 of Tencent's Tianjin Binhai Data Center.

In the field of cities and communities, more than 40 registered projects and nearly 20 certified programs have brought LEED cities and communities in China to a new milestone.

Leed North Asia Managing Director Du Risheng

In 2023, China continues to lead the way in LEED green building, and this remarkable achievement is not an achievement achieved overnight, but a collective effort. I would like to thank the many businesses and organizations involved in LEED who are committed to tackling climate change and incorporating LEED into their sustainability or ESG frameworks. I'm thrilled that we're growing with our fellow workers transforming our buildings, cities and communities into healthier and more sustainable places."
