What is the Immigration Medical Surcharge?
The Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) is a medical service fee levied by the National Health Service (NHS) on non-British citizens who have lived in the UK for more than 6 months, so that anyone who legally enters the UK and holds a long-term visa can enjoy the NHS of the UK like a local resident, and promote a fair and sustainable health care system.
IHS fees are payable at the time of submission of a UK visa application and vary depending on the length of stay and the applicant's status. Upon payment of the IHS fee, visa applicants can enjoy free medical services including a GP consultation, referral to a hospital** by a GP, hospitalization, emergency services at the hospital, and ambulance services.
