U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin was hospitalized again on Sunday (Feb. 11) with bladder problems and handed over duties to Deputy Hicks. He was previously hospitalized for two weeks due to complications from surgery for prostate cancer.

Pentagon spokesman Ryder said earlier Sunday that Austin would continue to perform his duties during his acceptance at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. The White House and Congress have been informed that Austin is hospitalized.

Austin must travel to Brussels on Wednesday (14th) to attend a meeting of the Ukrainian Defense Contact Group, and it is unclear whether his hospitalization will affect this trip.

Last month, Austin was criticized by both parties in Congress for not immediately reporting his cancer diagnosis and two subsequent hospitalizations to Biden. He later apologized for not informing Biden, his colleagues and the people of his prostate cancer and hospitalization.

Austin is scheduled to testify before Congress on Feb. 29.

Austin, 70, entered Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Jan. 1 only Defense Department spokesman Ryder and Chief of Staff McGsamen, and Austin's deputy, Hicks, did not know that he was hospitalized. White House spokesman Kirby said on January 9 that Biden only learned that Austin was hospitalized on the 4th, and it was not until the morning of the 9th that he learned that Austin's hospitalization was prostate cancer. After the news broke, Republicans, including former Trump, slammed Austin for dereliction of duty and should resign, but Biden still stood up for Austin.
