Professor Tao Liang was elected as a new member of the top international society for thoracic and cardiac surgery

Professor Tao Liang has been engaged in clinical work in cardiac surgery for 36 years, and has served as the president and director of cardiac surgery at Wuhan Asia Heart Hospital, specializing in complex congenital heart disease, heart valve disease, coronary heart disease, cardiac macrovascular disease, heart tumor, heart transplantation and other surgeries. Over the past decades, he has established a complete system of cardiac surgeon training, assessment and selection in the Department of Cardiac Surgery of Asia Heart Hospital, led the team to complete more than 70,000 cases of cardiovascular surgery, and ranked among the top 3 in the country in terms of surgical volume for many years, and personally presided over and completed more than 10,000 cases of various cardiovascular disease surgeries, matching the difficulty of surgery with doctors' specialties and greatly reducing surgical complications.

Professor Tao Liang (middle) continues to make breakthroughs and innovations, and a number of surgical techniques have reached the world-class level.

In terms of professionalism, Professor Tao Liang dares to challenge difficult surgeries, complex surgeries, and critical surgeries, and constantly innovates surgical techniques, and has created the theory and practice of aortic root reconstruction, petticoat technology for valve surgery and double valve ring enlargement surgery, especially minimally invasive bovine pericardial aortic valvuloplasty, which can not only preserve and maintain the patient's own valve structure, but also avoid the pain of postoperative anticoagulation, and has won the Wuhan Science and Technology Progress Award and the Hubei Science and Technology Progress Award.

In terms of valve disease, Professor Tao Liang independently developed an improved petticoat technology, so that the small "heart gate" can also use a large valve, and more patients have benefited from it, and the technology has been promoted from Wuhan to many heart centers across the country.

Professor Tao Liang has been invited to attend various academic conferences and share his experience with his peers.

In order to save patients with macrovascular disease, he established a green channel system for type A dissection treatment. Patients with critical cardiac and macrovascular diseases were sent to Wuhan Asia Heart Hospital, where preoperative preparations and surgery were completed within an average of 3 hours, which was a benchmark for international leading experience, creating a "green channel" for rapid treatment in Asia Heart Hospital, and saving countless acute and critical patients. He also dared to innovate and combined with clinical experience, he has developed several medical innovative device products, which will benefit more patients in the future.

Professor Tao Liang was awarded the title of "Wuhan Model Worker" in 2009; In 2010, he won the Outstanding Physician Award of the 4th "Cardiovascular Surgeon Award of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association" (Golden Knife Award); In September 2020, he was awarded the honorary title of "The Fourth National Famous Doctor, Outstanding Achievements" at the 4th National Name Ceremony.

In addition to clinical work, Professor Tao Liang (left) actively participates in various public welfare activities.

Founded in 1917, AATS is a prestigious international academic organization in the field of thoracic and cardiac surgery. AATS membership is an important honour given to leading experts worldwide who have made significant contributions and achieved excellence in the field of thoracic and cardiac surgery. Although AATS has been established for more than 100 years, there are currently only more than 1,500 members worldwide, and only more than 20 thoracic and cardiac surgeons from China.
