Hu Hesheng has done original work in many fields in the fields of differential geometry and mathematical physics. She is not only the first female academician in the field of mathematics in China, but also the first Chinese woman to step onto the podium of the Noether report of the International Congress of Mathematicians.
Hu Hesheng's husband is Gu Chaohao, a famous mathematician in China and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (who passed away in 2012). This academician couple, who have worked together and made remarkable achievements, have been persisting in mathematical research for 60 years and have achieved fruitful results.

[1] Studied under the mathematician Su Buqing
In June 1928, Hu Hesheng was born in Shanghai into an artistic family, originally from Nanjing, Jiangsu, and his grandfather Hu Yanqing and father Hu Boxiang were both well-known painters.
In 1945, after graduating from Shanghai Qingxin Girls' High School, Hu Hesheng was admitted to the Department of Mathematics of Jiaotong University. Due to health reasons, she transferred to the Department of Mathematics and Physics of Shanghai Daxia University in 1948 to continue her studies.
In 1950, she was admitted to both Peking University and Zhejiang University. However, due to her frail health since she was a child, her parents were worried that it would be difficult for her to adapt to the northern climate, and she heard that the famous mathematician Mr. Su Buqing was also at Zhejiang University, and that year, she successfully became a master's student under Su Buqing.
Su Buqing is internationally renowned and is one of the founders of the Chinese Mathematical Society. He is mainly engaged in the research of differential geometry and computational geometry, and has founded the school of differential geometry recognized at home and abroad.

According to the Zhejiang University Daily, during her studies at Zhejiang University, Su Buqing praised Hu Hesheng and set up a special seminar for him, designating some of the latest research results in international mathematics journals for her to read. The latest research results published in international mathematical journals are available in English, German and Russian, and some are nearly 100 pages long. In order to understand the content of the article, Hu He calculated and pondered all day long, and often "drove the night train" (stayed up late to study).
Once, the next morning, when she had to report that she "drove the night train" until the second half of the night, she couldn't support it, and fell asleep at her desk, and she didn't wake up by the time the discussion class began at 8 a.m. Su Buqing was waiting in the classroom, and when he saw that she hadn't arrived, he hurried to the dormitory to find her, but when he saw her desk's **, dictionary and lecture script, his anger disappeared, but he still asked her to follow him to the class immediately to make a report.
This master's degree experience had a great impact on Hu Hesheng's academic career, and she herself later sighed: "It is good for teachers to be strict, and I have developed the habit of diligent thinking and repeated experience when I was a graduate student. ”
In the summer of 1951, Hu Hesheng became an intern researcher at the Institute of Mathematics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences at the recommendation of Su Buqing.
In 1952, colleges and universities across the country underwent a major adjustment of faculties. At that time, Zhejiang University had seven colleges: arts, science, engineering, agriculture, law, medicine, and teachers. Among them, the Department of Mathematics of the Faculty of Science, where Hu Hesheng worked, was merged into Fudan University. In August of the same year, Hu Hesheng was transferred to Fudan University along with Su Buqing, Chen Jiangong and other teachers from Zhejiang University. In 1956, she was officially transferred to the Institute of Mathematics of Fudan University.
In 1980, Hu Hesheng was promoted to professor, and the following year he became one of the first doctoral supervisors at the Institute of Mathematics at Fudan University.
[2] A pair of "fairy couples" in the mathematical world
Hu Hesheng and Gu Chaohao are an academician couple, and they are also a well-known "fairy couple" in China's mathematics community. In 2003, the two elders attended a gathering of Wenzhou villagers in Shanghai.
At the party, Gu Chaohao still clearly remembers the scene of his first meeting with Hu Hesheng: "It was 1950 (at that time, Gu Chaohao served as Su Buqing's teaching assistant, and Hu Hesheng was Su Buqing's graduate student), I met Hu Hesheng in the library of the Department of Mathematics, and she said that Mr. Su gave her a **, some things were not clear, and she wanted me to help her take a look." I said, okay, **? She said** in the dorm. Her dormitory is more than ten minutes away from my office. It was already autumn, but it was still hot, and she ran out of breath to get it back, and I thought this little girl was very good, and she was willing to study her knowledge. We discussed it together, and she figured out all the contents. ”

In 1957, after 7 years of "long-distance love running", Hu Hesheng and Gu Chaohao tied the knot.
In November 1996, Gu Chaohao's 70th birthday, 94-year-old Su Buqing smiled, very interested, he held Gu Chaohao with one hand, Hu Hesheng with the other, and said kindly, "Today I want to bless you both!" When you two got married, I was the matchmaker! ”

In 1991, Hu Hesheng was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Gu Chaohao was happier than when he was elected as an academician, and happily wrote a poem for his wife to congratulate: "Study hard at night, before dawn." Geometry is true, and physics is a new chapter. The red makeup is ignored, and the color is natural. The academy has a name to celebrate the sunny day. ”
Not only live in harmony, Hu Hesheng and Gu Chaohao also support each other in academic research, and their cooperation has achieved considerable results.
According to Wenzhou *** report, after the death of Mr. Gu Chaohao, Hu Hesheng was hospitalized for more than ten years. Even during his hospitalization, Hu Hesheng, who was in the hospital bed, still insisted on learning and published books.
[3] China's first female mathematician academician
Due to Hu Hesheng's outstanding contributions in the field of mathematics, in 1991, Hu Hesheng was elected as a member (academician) of the Department of Mathematical Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and is also the first female academician of mathematicians in China. In 2003, she was elected a member of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World.
The World Congress of Mathematicians is recognized as the highest level of the world's mathematics community once every four years. In memory of the great German mathematician ESince 1994, every International Congress of Mathematicians has invited a world-renowned female mathematician to give a presentation at the Noether Conference. Due to Hu Hesheng's outstanding research achievements in soliton theory, he was highly praised by the international mathematical community, and was invited to give a noether report at the 2002 International Congress of Mathematicians.
According to the data of "Ho Liang Ho Li", Hu Hesheng has been engaged in the teaching of a large number of basic courses and professional courses since his graduate days, such as guiding senior college students in differential geometry specialized seminars and graduation**, and assisting Professor Su Buqing in training graduate students for a long time, as well as independently training graduate students.
For example, in a semester in 1958, Hu Hesheng supervised students to graduate with as many as 40 articles. She cares about her students holistically and is deeply respected by them, and has trained many excellent differential geometricians.
After the age of 70, Hu Hesheng insisted on organizing seminars and guiding graduation**. She is both strict and caring for graduate students, in addition to careful business guidance, she also provides them with employment or further study abroad. As of June 2018, Hu Hesheng has trained 20 PhDs alone or jointly under the supervision of others, of which 3 have been awarded the National Excellent Doctorate**, and more than 30 master's degrees have been trained.
Academician Hu Hesheng has devoted his life to education and scientific research, and has made outstanding contributions to teaching and educating people, scientific research, discipline construction, and international exchanges. Her tireless and tenacious academic spirit will continue to inspire generations of young students to reach new heights in mathematics.
