Emperor Jiajing was the eleventh emperor of the Ming Dynasty, and he reigned for 45 years, making him one of the longest-reigning emperors of the Ming Dynasty. In the early days of his reign, he was still an accomplished emperor, and he implemented a series of reform measures, such as rectifying the rule of officials, reforming the imperial examination, and fighting against the Japanese invaders, so that the national strength of the Ming Dynasty was restored and developed to a certain extent. However, as time passed, he began to indulge in cultivation and alchemy, pursued immortality, and ignored the government, which led to corruption and social turmoil.
Emperor Jiajing's obsession with cultivating and refining pills can be said to have reached the point of going mad. Not only did he cultivate the Dao Alchemy himself, but he also asked the ministers to follow him in cultivating the Dao Alchemy. He also gave himself a Taoist name, called "Jiajing Zhenjun", and also gave himself the title of "Wanshou Emperor". In order to cultivate the Tao and refine the pill, he spent a lot of manpower, material resources and financial resources, causing huge waste and losses. He was also superstitious about magic, listened to the slander of the traitor Yan Song, and reused Yan Song's father and son, which led to the darkness and corruption of the government. He also treated his subjects cruelly, striking and ** against loyal ministers who spoke out, and suppressing and ** the people who rebelled against him. His actions are infuriating and saddening.
Emperor Jiajing's immorality also caused dissatisfaction and rebellion among the palace ladies. Angry and desperate at Emperor Jiajing's monastic alchemy and brutal rule, the ladies decided to launch an assassination attempt to kill Emperor Jiajing. In the middle of the night in 1542, the palace maid Yang Jinying and others took advantage of the fact that Emperor Jiajing was asleep and strangled him by the neck with a rope, trying to strangle him to death. However, due to the inexperience of the palace maids and the knots of the rope were not tight, Emperor Jiajing was strangled half to death and did not die. When the palace ladies saw that the assassination failed, they scattered in all directions. This is the famous "Renyin Palace Change" in history.
Although this palace rebellion was not successful, it brought a huge shock and blow to Emperor Jiajing. From then on, he was full of fear and suspicion of the palace maids, and no longer dared to live in the harem of the Forbidden City, but moved to live in the Wanshou Palace in Xiyuan. He no longer cultivates the Tao and alchemy, but concentrates on politics, but his body and spirit have been severely damaged and he cannot return to his previous state. He died in 1567 at the age of 60.
