It may be hard to imagine that the notch screen of the iPhone 14 or the Dynamic Island of the iPhone 15 will be any different than it is now, but in fact, behind these finalized designs, Apple went through a series of complete design and review processes, some of which were not adopted by the design concept recently leaked.
According to information exclusively obtained by MacRumors, Apple explored a number of different design options before settling on the current design. At the same time, a number of mock-up images were produced to show what the rejected design ideas might look like.
One idea in mind was to add a pop-up sidebar on the right side of the screen, alongside the notch, to show the time, signal strength, battery level, and other key information.
Apple has also reportedly considered extending the notch to the top of the entire screen to form a status bar design similar to that of an Android phone, which may bring users an additional battery life boost.
Apple's design team was equally brainstormed when it came to introducing the Dynamic Island design, which first appeared on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. They had the idea of having a whole row of status icons underneath the front-facing camera, but that didn't happen.
In addition, the design team also tried a design of the Dynamic Island that always maintained an elongated form, that is, a fixed "island", but decided to let the Dynamic Island change shape and size according to the usage scenario.
For more complete illustrations of the simulation and design ideas that could become reality, visit MacRumors. As Apple continues to tweak the exterior design of its iPhone lineup, we may see some of these design ideas revisited in the future.
Also, if Apple can find a way to put the front camera and its adjacent sensors under the screen (as Samsung did with the Galaxy Z Fold 5), there is a chance that both the notch screen and the Dynamic Island will eventually disappear entirely.
