Author: J Mom Big Child J English Enlightenment.
On the road to enlightenment for a year, bullfrogs can't be raised, and my mother is almost a professional-level player.
This is a 6000 word long essay, and here are the steps to read it::
First of all, see if you don't touch your mother in the four of you, if not, then you don't have to watch it;
Second, if yes, read the paragraph about planning your route and entering carefully;
Finally, enlightenment or not, learning English is a long road for ten years, come on together!
Today is the first anniversary of the enlightenment of the two children, and my brother is going to take the Wonders G2 course recently, and he has also done some tests: corresponding to the European standard CEFR A2, the Lens index test 250L, and struggling in the bridge book stage; My sister can have a conversation, and when she is in a foreign teacher's class, she will lead the conversation and say what she wants to say. It is with great emotion that I write this commemorative article. There is no bullfrog, it doesn't take a lot of time and energy, and a year is just the beginning, I hope to encourage my mother who is walking on the long march of family enlightenment.
The situation of the two babies last year.
On this day last year, in the summer vacation of July 17, my brother Jason was more than 7 years old at that time, and had just finished the first grade of public primary school, and there was an English class in the first grade, using Shanghai Oxford textbooks, 3 periods a week, and about 100 words were taught in a year; My younger sister Elsa is more than 4 and a half years old, and she has completed a small class in a public kindergarten, and she is not bilingual and has no foundation at all. I haven't reported to any institutions, and I haven't watched English cartoons, and I grew up in the company of a bald head in my childhood.
The idea of enlightenment is emerging.
One day in May last year, I went to my girlfriend's house to play, her daughter was studying at a certain V institution, I thought it was very good, and I quickly signed up for my brother. However, after taking 7 classes, he cried and didn't want to go, I was helpless to refund, in fact, I was very disappointed, why others can go, but Jason can't ......
Although the fee was refunded, the institution had a lot of resources and lectures, and I was lucky to join some groups, and the information continued to pour in, paying attention to Little Peanut, Big Bear, Xiaohua, and Rou Ma*** began to listen to lectures and read the articles of the enlightenment route ......I feel that I am empowered, but the more I understand, the more I regret it, why did I go at the age of 0-6!! It's late!
There are many bullfrogs on the Internet who have succeeded through family enlightenment, including the famous ones we are familiar with, and they basically have some characteristics:
1. Early enlightenment, basically you can't find enlightenment after the age of 7, 2 years old, or even 1 year old;
2. Or can provide a mother-tongue-like environment, Gai Zhaoquan's son is 5 years old and goes to an English kindergarten (note that it is not bilingual), Xiaohua and Qian Er's mother ......The spoken language of these mothers is actually no different from that of foreigners; Not to mention that children have had the opportunity to live or go to school abroad;
3. Have parent-child reading habits before the age of 7, regardless of Chinese or English;
4. Even if you don't have any of the above, you have attended an international school, a bilingual kindergarten, an English institution or watched English cartoons before the age of 7;
Of course, there are many successful cases, and there are some mothers who are really not good at English, but there are few who do not touch one of the above four; There are also some mothers and babies who have amazing perseverance, and can also succeed in learning English for 2-4 hours a day by using the best learning methods.
I'm a four-of-a-kind mom who doesn't touch me, and I don't have amazing perseverance. What to do?
Enlightenment route planning.
I still carefully studied Mr. Gai Zhaoquan's English planning route: on the basis of a large amount of listening input, the whole sentence output, learning phonics, graded reading, and finally realizing independent reading chapter books. In fact, this is the normal route of learning the mother tongue, 1-2 years old children are not very good at speaking, but they understand, to 3-4 years old words have been spoken very well, read with him and teach him to recognize words (ABC), and so he needs to read, teach him pinyin (phonics), and finally 6-8 years old baby can hold the book and read it there. If you want to do this in English, the best age for enlightenment is 3 years old, the baby is in the language explosion period, there is a large amount of suitable materials, input 1-2 years, and then learn phonics, about 6 years old can seamlessly connect with the American primary school curriculum, some cow babies can read high chapter books at about 6 years old. Don't be too envious when you see these bullfrogs, Chinese 2-3-year-old children know a lot ......of two or three thousand words, and they have read all the four famous books before elementary school, and they can't do it in their mother tongue, let alone English
What is the biggest reference value of the route for me? It made me understand that the goal is to plan for at least 10 years, and the order of listening, speaking, reading and writing cannot be changed. So I started working on the first step again: listening. Input and ear grinding are the most commonly heard words, the word ear grinding was popularized by Anne Flowers, and it is a bit misinterpreted, anyway, just listening to audio is invalid input; Relatively valid input or comprehensible input is increasingly recognized, and Total Physical Response (TPR) is the initiation teaching method in many institutions. In addition, it was my goal at the time to learn phonics with a minimum of 1,000 listening words (1,000 words is just an order of magnitude concept, not a specific 1,000 words, 3,000 words is the best, which is the standard for children in native speaking countries).
But I still don't know where to start, in the face of two babies, in fact, I am weak-hearted, whether it is life or study, I basically have not managed, and I have not even lived in the same house with them for 3 years. Huang Shengyi's example, everyone can see it very clearly, and I also re-examine my mentality when I was on a certain V agency on Jason, maybe my anxiety made him feel uncomfortable!
The parent-child relationship is the foundation.
I realized that the first thing I needed to change was myself, the parent-child relationship. Fortunately, I have taken the psychological counselor exam, and I have a certain foundation, and I took out some of the books on children's psychology that I had read before, and in addition, before giving birth to my sister, the 0-3 year old attachment relationship with Jason was also well established. Over the past year, I have respected him more, listened actively, and identified whether it was a problem of ability or emotion, and was a helper to help him solve problems, but I paid more attention to cultivating his sense of autonomy and independence.
I listened to Mr. Chen Mo's class: how to be a parent who is not anxious, I am also very touched, at least I will be more tolerant of my children, and I am determined to be a parent who is not anxious.
Input stage interest is the starting point.
If a child likes his or her parents, there is no child who does not like to play with his or her parents! Children are also very concerned about their parents' every move, and they see everything you do. So English initiation also starts with the parents, it's what you do, not the children.
First of all, I choose some English songs with high recognition at home, such as Row Row Row Your Boat, Old Macdonald, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, etc., I will be very involved in singing along, and the child will be attracted quickly and eager to try; Then I learned about the super **songs (referred to as 3s) written for the enlightenment teaching of children in non-native speaking countries.
The entire series contains hundreds of songs about animals, colors, shapes, numbers, letters, body parts, movements, food, time, and more. Listen every day, the noun points and says, and the verb TPR (whole body action response) makes them understand the meaning, not translated!
For example: when singing clap your hands, clap your hands, stomp your feet, stomp your feet. Of course, when you first hear clap your hands (listen), he doesn't understand what it means, you do the clapping action (look), he understands (understands), if you still don't understand, first wave your hand to let the baby understand that the hand is a hand, and then clap your hands; Hear clap your hands again, he will look at you, he will start mimicking your movements, and when he is familiar with it (remember), he will do it faster than you. Therefore, from seeing, listening, understanding to short-term memory is just a cycle, when a certain phrase or sentence appears repeatedly, the formation of long-term memory is a valid input, and from input to output is a more complex process. Can't wait! If the parent-child relationship is poor, he can't look at you, what you do can't attract his attention, then you don't even have a short-term memory, how can you enter effectively?
Secondly, I started looking for the right picture book. I'm very cautious when buying picture books, and I read the ones recommended by the master first. I have visited the community library in Beverly Hills, USA, where the picture books are graded according to the difficulty of AA-Z (suitable for 0-12 years old), 2-3 year old babies in the United States can reach 2000-3000 listening vocabulary, 4-5 years old can reach 5000 listening vocabulary, and the rate of more than 2000 words per year is growing, until about 12 years old to reach about 20,000 words ** level, while the Chinese primary school graduation standard is 700 words, junior high school graduation 1500 words, high school graduation 3500 words, Level 4 4200 word ......Therefore, the water of picture books is very deep, and many picture books cannot be read at all at the level of thousands of words we have!
There are three more famous book lists on the market: Liao Caixing, Wang Peiting, Wu Minlan, in the end, I chose to refer to Liao Caixing's book list, Mother Goose and Dr. Seuss skipped first (because they didn't understand), many picture books in the first 10 weeks are very classic, like Brown Bear, Five Little Monkeys, they all like it; The expression of liking is that I am willing to listen to it repeatedly, I will unconsciously read and recite it, and I like to look at the corresponding picture book ......Liao Dan's picture books, my purchase principle is that I really like to listen to them before I buy them.
I also used 40 Pearson Basic Books, and I chose this set of books because it was cheap and ......But I was pleasantly surprised when I actually used it, it wasn't boring at all, I read it about 2-3 times last summer, and when I was talking, I would put aside a book that I had completely mastered, and I would continue to talk about new words.
However, there are a lot of young picture books that are cognitive-based, and it's not very difficult, and the young ones have to start with spot, where is my belly, bunny, dear zoo, etc., my sister likes it, and my brother doesn't feel it.
Finally, mom needs to speak colloquially. I didn't write parent-child English, because in the early stage, I was playing a one-man show, and there was no dialogue! We should have forgotten how to teach our children to speak Chinese, but we can still meet some mothers in the elevator with a one- or two-year-old baby, and the mother will point to us and say to the baby: "There is an aunt in the elevator." ”
So all the mothers who want to get into the pit parent-child English:
The first thing to do is to let the child notice that you are talking, such as woo a butterfly in an exaggerated tone! The second is to be able to understand what you are saying, and how to understand it, as described above for valid input.
I remember a long time when Elsa had a conversation with me, she would just say yes ok。But that's the conversation, and she understands it!
It is recommended to start with what you see in your daily life to the real things
For example, tree, flower, you can add a quantity, an adjective into a phrase: a tiny pink flower, and then into a sentence.
If you can say a word, you have to find a way to add it to a sentence, e.g., "What are you wearing today with blue or pink?" Take the clothes and say it's best.
I have read a book about "The Language of Parents", saying that there is a gap of 30 million words between poor and rich children before the age of 4 to hear the language of their parents, so under the positive and positive response, giving children rich descriptions has an indelible effect on children's language and psychological development.
Adding spoken language again, the instructions on the back of those parent-child English books can come in handy, such as: brush your teeth, mother's own English is also gradual, for example, put on shoes, say put on your shoes at the beginning
Actually, there are many kinds of shoes:
boots、sandal、slipper、sneaker……, slowly replaced;
Finally, there is a dialogue, at the beginning you can ask more general questions, are you hungry? Then add a choice question sentence and a special question sentence, what do you want for breakfast?Our English textbooks are basically conversational, and it is no problem to use them in dialogue to test whether the child has mastered them, but the answers do not need to be exactly the same as the textbooks.
Complements, games and shows. Games and performances are basically a needle that can be used when you need to pass the time.
Game. Song Games. The noun points to say, action tpr. In July last year, after listening to some 3S songs, I began to add games to my life, such as: singing walking while walking, dancing and singing hop hop hop on one foot, suddenly speeding up and singing runing runing, and finally stopping to say stop, this process will be very happy for children.
Picture book games, such as "From Head to Toe", have some verbs in this picture book that are not simple, and let children understand them by doing actions together. Say words. We will play on the way to the bus, and start by saying simple noun classification word games, such as: say animals, say fruits; I still remember one time when my two babies and I were at home and wrote English words on post-it notes about things we saw at home.
i spy。I spy parents in European and American countries often play a conversation game with their children, which is to say something that can be seen at the moment for others to guess: "I spy with my little eye." it’s something red. it can swim.” it’s afish!”。There are many more books of this type of game, but the gameplay is different.
Skill Sharpeners (left) and i spy (right) inside the book.
It's also a good way to make exercise books, foreign exercise books are not boring at all, I bought skill sharpeners for them to do, and they are very interactive, one will draw, one will connect, one will cut paper, and one will color. I can do 20-30 pages at a time.
Elsa knew that she was a Elsa fan by looking at her name, last summer Frozen movie watched more than 10 times, listened to the audio more than 10 times (I must emphasize that this view is invalid input, most of her incomprehensible, but because she really likes it, I didn't stop it), I printed out the movie lines and played some of the scenes with her, she couldn't speak English at first I said English lines she said Chinese, in the performance, at least the scenes and dialogues we chose she could understand some.
Are animations good for input? My experience is that it's best to have a certain amount of experience before watching cartoons. Last summer, I only saw a MAX train in my impression, which belongs to enlightenment animation.
In the end, I spent 2 months, 1-2 hours a day, that is, at the end of the summer vacation, to solve Jason's first 500 words of listening input, and complete most of the Sight Words recognition, Elsa's absorption is still a little slower about 200 words or so listening words, still not recognizable. Don't underestimate 500 words, this is the amount of learning in a normal offline 3-6 year old foreign teacher institution!
Phonics graded reading.
500-1000 listening words is the minimum requirement for learning phonics, 3000 words is the best. As for why I was in a hurry to start learning phonics, it was because I didn't know enough about the grading system at that time, and I didn't have systematic listening input. The learning of phonics is based on the institution, and there are 2 classes a week. After more than 2 months of study, I learned half of the rules, and started to learn other course materials in December.
In September, I bought a set of 40 books of Piggy and Elephant, he liked it a lot, so he started Jason bedtime parent-child reading, 15-30 minutes a day, I began to buy graded book lists, 18 copies of Puppy Biscuit, 20 copies of Peter the Cat, 15 copies of Little Criter, 15 copies of Fly Guy, 18 copies of Arthur Kid, 20 copies of I Can Read 1 and 2, 10 copies of I Am series, 220 copies of Oxford Tree L1-L7, There are 204 copies of RAZ AA-D, a total of more than 550 copies, basically 5-10 copies per day. If I recommend it, I recommend the Oxford tree because it is interesting.
One of the bookshelves in the home.
Textbook system learning.
In December, Jason not only began to try to read the low-difficulty grading, but also began to study the textbook Wonders, 3 sessions a week, 3 months, that is, after the end of this year, he finished the GK level of learning, and brushed up on 180 Wonders and Journeys supporting grading.
As for the selection of teaching materials, I would like to briefly mention them. There are 4 types of textbooks on the market, taking primary school graduation as an example:
The simplest is the textbooks of public schools, which are unique to China, such as: Renjiao Edition, Shanghai Oxford, Foreign Language Research Society, which mainly teaches words and dialogues, and teaches grammar in the upper grades; Vocabulary: 600-800 words; The course standard is too low to be used by training institutions.
The second is the textbooks of bilingual private schools, mainly EFL (English as a Foreign Language) textbooks, such as: Hong Kong Longman, Cambridge Children's English, Big English, etc., with a vocabulary of 1500-2500 words; Most offline and a few online training institutions use this kind of textbook, if your baby is already a student in a bilingual school, don't choose this kind of textbook, because the difficulty is about the same, except for the upper grades to strengthen new concepts in grammar.
The other is called ESL (English as a second language), and I have heard of Spotlight on English, subject English. Vocabulary is not understood. Used by a small number of institutions. In other words, ESL's textbooks should be more suitable for learning, and I don't know why they have not been vigorously promoted.
The last one is English Language Arts, which is a foreign language, and the so-called CCSS system is very popular, such as: California textbook Wonders, National Geographic REACH, Texas textbook Journeys, with a vocabulary of more than 5,000. It is used by most online institutions and some offline foreign teaching institutions.
In the end, I chose Wonders. In fact, the CCSS standard has failed to be implemented in the United States, and in China, it has a lot to do with the propaganda of some organizations. Of course, the advantage of following the trend is that there are many institutional choices.
Selection of institutions.
As for the choice of institutions, I have also done a lot of research, and I have auditioned all online and online institutions.
Institutions must be found, and when to find them depends on the choice of parents. It is best to have a certain listening vocabulary as a basis before taking a foreign teacher's class.
The selection of institutions can be based on three criteria:
1. Textbook system; Textbooks or course standards determine the teaching objectives, and the content absorbed by students is normally lower than the teaching objectives; If you follow the EFL textbook of an institution, from the age of 3 to the end of elementary school, with a standard of 1500 words, I think the strength of this institution should be grammar and test-taking.
2. Schedule or flexibility; If the textbook is about the same, what is the progress, and how often will it take to get on one. Is there a corresponding assessment, can I change classes and skip classes?
3. Teachers. There are also many non-standard pronunciations in the United States. I don't want to mention qualifications, how teachers are and how parents listen and feel for themselves.
Offline institutions are mainly small-class classes, and its progress is not up to my requirements, so I finally chose an online institution with fixed teachers, and the course adjustment is flexible. After finishing GK, I silently counted in my heart, if the progress of some offline institutions is followed, it will take 3 years, 70,000!
During the winter break, I took him to an institution to do a STAR test, GE was 12, which is the average reading level of the first grade and two months in the United States. Reading institutions are generally very professional, but Jason because phonics is only half of it, the institution recommends starting from the phonics class, that is, it takes a year and a half to get to G2, so he gave up and decided to continue to take G1 online after finishing the second half of his spelling during the winter vacation.
In March of this year, Jason started studying Wonders G1. 2 sessions a week. I am in charge of the content of the class, and almost every class needs to be transferred, and I can finish G1 in more than 4 months. Summer vacation is ready to start on G2.
Watch a few cartoons well.
At the end of last year, Elsa said a word: bunk bed, we don't know, she heard it from Starfall. I began to realize that I should find a way to continue typing, so I got into the habit of watching 20 minutes of cartoons every day, Jason sometimes watches it, but not as much time as her, Elsa watched Peppa Pig, Cayo, Dora, Little Princess, Big Muzzy, Meg and Mog, Super Wings in open mode, all of which can be understood, she wants to watch Sophia and My Little Pony, I think it's too difficult, and I stopped her. The audio of the first season of Peppa Pig has been listened to repeatedly, and the little princess and Kayo have to watch the matching picture book.
ELSA has also started online classes since the end of last year, one session a week, the textbook is not important, and she has begun to cultivate output. Since April this year, the active output in class has increased significantly, which is manifested in: you don't need to worry about attention problems, you can answer, you can ask questions, you can communicate with each other as a person, and you like to show interesting things to the teacher. When Elsa plays with toys, she will also talk to the dolls in English, which is a child's language advantage!
From burnout to renewed interest.
In March and April this year, because my listening did not keep up, I didn't do well in intensive reading, and the speed of Jason's grading slowed down significantly, Oxford Tree L8-L9 only had one book a day, and Raz saw J, but I felt that he didn't care, and the grading of Wonders G1 was only half brushed. Of course, the content is getting more and more difficult, the length and sentences are getting longer and longer, and I feel that he can't understand some long sentences, and the bottleneck and his burnout period are coming.
So when I was choosing a grade, I began to deliberately add science content me series, let's read and find out science, magic school bus, and library series with strong stories.
In May of this year, Jason became obsessed with animated films, and although I knew that it was not suitable in terms of difficulty, it was in line with his cognitive level and conducive to cultivating interest, so he watched it. He almost has a movie a day, how long the movie is, and he doesn't have time to do homework at night, so he gets up early in the morning to watch it. It feels like a cycle, and after a period you need to be stimulated with interest. Recently, I have slowly recovered the number of raz-graded readings of about 5 books a day. During the summer vacation, I still intensified my reading. I hope that in 1 year, Jason will be able to start reading chapter books, and in 2 years he will be able to read independently.
I started to read the story of Oxford Tree L6-L7 to Elsa in the last 1-2 months, she can understand it, her listening vocabulary is not much worse than her brother's, and sometimes the output is better than her brother's, because she has the desire to express, because she catches up with the ** period of 3-6 years old. For ELSA's next plan, at the age of 6, she began to synchronize the learning progress of the American elementary school system (GK-G6), and she was able to achieve independent reading in the summer vacation of her first grade two years later.
There is still a long way to go, persevere, persevere, persevere!
