How to tell if a graphics card is a discrete graphics card

Mondo Digital Updated on 2024-02-18

There are several ways to determine whether the graphics card in your computer is an integrated graphics card or a discrete graphics card:

In Windows, you can check the graphics card information through Device Manager to determine whether it is an integrated graphics card or a discrete graphics card

Presswin + xkey, select Device Manager.

Expand the Display Adapter option to see the graphics cards listed.

If Intel HD Graphics, AMD Radeon Vega, etc. are displayed, it usually means an integrated graphics card.

If it's NVIDIA Geforce, AMD Radeon Rx series, etc., this usually represents a discrete graphics card.

Some computers have both integrated and discrete graphics, both of which are listed here.

Graphics card details can be viewed through the System Information tool:

Presswin + rkey, entermsinfo32, and press Enter to open System Information.

Select Components > Display from the menu on the left to view the graphics card information on the right.

You can also use third-party software such as CPU-Z and GPU-Z to view detailed graphics card information, including whether it is an integrated graphics card or a discrete graphics card, as well as the model, manufacturer, and other information.

If it's a pre-installed computer, you can usually find specific hardware configuration information, including the type of graphics card, by entering your computer model on the computer manufacturer's official website**.

For desktop PCs, a discrete graphics card is often a separate hardware component that plugs into the PCI-E slot of the motherboard. Open the case and you can see the graphics card hardware directly. If the graphics card is connected through a small slot on the motherboard and is on the same chip as the CPU, then it is an integrated graphics card. This method does not work for laptops because the internal components of the laptop are not easily viewable.

An integrated graphics card is a graphics card that is integrated on the same chip as the CPU, or integrated with the motherboard, and is usually used for basic graphics processing tasks.

A discrete graphics card is a separate graphics card component with its own graphics processing unit (GPU) and video memory, which is stronger than the integrated graphics card, and is suitable for high-intensity graphics processing tasks such as games and graphic design.

With the above methods, you should be able to determine whether the graphics card in your computer is an integrated graphics card or a discrete graphics card.
