He successively served as secretary of the battalion headquarters of the 469th Regiment of the 44th Army of the Northeast Field Army, staff officer of the Training Section of the Jiangxi Military Region Headquarters, chief of the Military Training Section of the Fuzhou Military Subdivision, political commissar of the People's Armed Forces Department of Jinxian County, secretary of the Jinxian County Party Committee, chief of staff of the Fuzhou Military Division, commander of the Ji'an Military Division, deputy commander of the Jiangxi Provincial Military Region, and full-time deputy secretary of the Discipline Inspection Commission of the Jiangxi Military Region. He participated in major battles such as the Liaoshen Campaign and the Tianjin Campaign.
According to the Jiangxi Archives, Shen Zhongxiang, who was the deputy commander of the provincial military region at the time, participated in the extermination of Wang Zongfang and Wang Zongwei's brothers.
In February 1983, a murder case occurred in Shenyang where the "two kings" (Wang Zongfang and Wang Zongwei) were murdered. The latter two absconded to the southern provinces and shot and killed 11 public security officers and 11 people.
