Further Research Learners in L2 writing feedback are engaged in research

Mondo Education Updated on 2024-02-21

Project Background

Learner input in Written Corrective Feedback (WCF) has been a hot topic in writing research in recent years, but most of the existing studies only focus on one type of WCF** (such as teacher feedback, peer feedback, and automatic feedback), and mainly focus on qualitative research methods, while comparative studies on learner input with different WCF** are rare, and there are few quantitative analysis methods or mixed research methods based on experimental design. WCF is an important teaching strategy in English writing teaching, which has an important impact on the effectiveness of writing teaching, and studying the impact of WCF** on learners' engagement and other influencing factors can help front-line writing teachers optimize their teaching design and provide a more appropriate "scaffolding" for English learners.

Basic Information

Tutors are 1-on-1 remote online.

The duration of the project is 2-5 months.

Suitable for people

Undergraduates, master's students, doctoral students.

Students who are interested in applied linguistics, English major (teacher training direction), subject teaching, and pedagogy.

Students who want to get in touch with top overseas research teams and professors to do research together and experience the research environment abroad.

Mentor background

b.Feng Mentor.

Ph.D. from Tsinghua University. He is a 985 bachelor's degree, master's and doctoral degree, a recipient of the Sino-US Fulbright Scholarship, and a Fulbright visiting scholar. His main research areas are applied linguistics and language education. He has published more than 20 articles in domestic and foreign journals, including 4 SSCI articles, presided over two provincial and ministerial projects, and participated in a number of national natural sciences, national social sciences, and research projects of the Ministry of Education and provincial social sciences. Reviewer of important journals at home and abroad.

Learning content

1) Read the relevant literature and gather current information on corrective feedback and learner input.

2) Systematic analysis, determine the research method, and complete the research design.

3) Analyze the characteristics of different corrective feedback (you can choose only one type of feedback**) and determine the key data and methods of measurement (you can choose only one input dimension).

4) Collect data.

5) Complete the quantitative coding of writing corpus and the qualitative coding of stimulus recall data.

6) Analyze the effectiveness of feedback and learner engagement performance.

Research Focus:

1) Written corrective feedback from Chinese English learners on different **.

a.Behavioral input.

b.Cognitive input.

c.Emotional investment.

d.Social investment.

and 2) the impact of error types on the relationship between WCF and learner engagement.

3) Does learners' prior knowledge of WCF** affect their level of engagement?

The main tools of the research methodology

Experimental or quasi-experimental design, meta-analysis, inferential statistics (linear regression and logistic regression analysis are the mainstays).

Project Harvest

An immersive scientific experience.

Personalized recommendation letter from the tutor (10 online recommendations).
