A senior Chinese teacher with 10 years of teaching experience shared: "Memorization is not difficult, the key is to master the correct method. Many students often fall into the misconception that memorization is just a mechanical repetition and ignores the understanding of knowledge.
The essence of memorization is understanding. Many students find it difficult to memorize because they only move their mouths mechanically, without being screened and understood by their brains. Therefore, comprehension is the primary task of memorization. For high school students, there is a lot of content that needs to be memorized in each subject, and understanding each knowledge point is the key to achieving effective memorization.
So, how do you memorize effectively for comprehension? Here are four practical ways for parents to bookmark and share with their children!
First of all, it is necessary to understand the logical relationship of the textbook chapters. Each textbook has its own logic that students need to understand. When you get a textbook, you can first turn to the table of contents section and then draw a mind map of the book on a blank A4 piece of paper. This mind map needs to be detailed to every eye in every box. After you are done, take the mind map and think about why the textbook is arranged this way and what is the purpose of this arrangement. By thinking deeply, students will have a clearer understanding of the structure of the entire book and will become more effective in memorization.
Second, memorize the material in a test-oriented manner. The importance of each knowledge point in the exam is different, and students need to be clear about which knowledge points are commonly tested. For example, in the third chapter of "Socialism with Chinese Characteristics", a compulsory course in high school politics, I learned the process and significance of reform and opening up. Although these two knowledge points are very important, the common test in the exam is "talk about your understanding of reform and opening up". Therefore, students need to focus on memorizing this part so that they can write the answers directly during the exam.
Third, find out the similarities and differences in the content that needs to be memorized. This helps students build their body of knowledge. For example, the concept of administrative organizational structure in politics is not only applicable to the understanding of districts and counties, but can also be applied to other concepts. By identifying the similarities and differences in the knowledge points, students can better understand and remember the content.
Finally, the keyword memory method was adopted. This is a very effective method of memorization. When students need to memorize a knowledge point, they can first circle the technical terms (usually nouns) in the sentence with a pencil. Then, memorize the circled words in their entirety. Next, understand and outline in your own words the relationship between other uncircled words and circled words. Doing so can help students better understand and memorize knowledge points, as the exam focuses more on students' comprehension and thinking skills rather than simple memorization.
