Do PhDs have to work in universities or research institutes?

Mondo Education Updated on 2024-02-17

Today, the employment of university graduates has long been diversified. PhD graduates are no exception.

The so-called diversification largely refers to the employment units and positions, which are not directly related to the majors studied. For example, graduates of a certain major have been selected and transferred through the public examination, and have been incorporated into all levels and public institutions. Among them, there are a large number of doctoral students. For example, only 40% of doctoral graduates enter universities and research institutes every year and are directly engaged in teaching or scientific research in their majors.

So, what about other people's choices?

First of all, it must be noted that in recent years, the social employment environment has indeed seen a rise in academic qualifications, and the requirements of employers for candidates have also increased. At the same time, it also reflects the increasing level of education of the younger generation. As for whether the Ph.D. should all go to universities or research institutes? This problem should be viewed rationally, and cannot be simply commented on by the waste of educational resources and time costs.

In fact, all over the world, even in some developed countries, there are many PhDs engaged in jobs that have little to do with their own specialty. A significant number of people will work in applied positions.

In reality, doctoral students are a group of top-notch talents, and their employment scope is quite extensive. From the perspective of scientific research, not only conventional scientific research institutes can go, some central and state-owned enterprises, including some well-known private enterprises, will have their own research and development institutions. These institutions are in need of doctoral talents, and many doctoral talents are accepted to varying degrees every year. Some companies do not yet have postdoctoral workstations.

It should also be pointed out that many of the talents introduced by relevant institutions and local departments at all levels are for doctors, and the positions introduced also require professional quality and skills, and these cited doctors are engaged in work related to their own majors. Even if they are civil servants, they are professional and technical civil servants.

So the job market for PhD students is very diverse.
