On the eve of the Spring Festival, it is the time for thousands of lights to reunite. I wanted to celebrate the holiday, but if I didn't get it right, it would cause danger and hurt my eyes. On February 15, the reporter learned from an interview that in the past week, Aier Eye Hospital affiliated to Wuhan University has received many patients injured by fireworks.
On February 10, 27-year-old Xiaowei (pseudonym) was playing with firecrackers with a friend in the countryside when he was injured in the eye by a "cupola", causing his right eye to hurt on the spot. Subsequently, his family rushed him to Aier Eye Hospital affiliated to Wuhan University for treatment.
After examination, Xiaowei had a ruptured eyeball injury in his right eye, traumatic hyphema in his right eye, and a laceration of the eyelid in his right eye, and his eye had completely lost his sense of light, requiring emergency surgery.
Wang Guohua, director of the fundus disease department of Aier Eye Hospital affiliated to Wuhan University, said that during the Chinese New Year every year, the department will admit many patients who have been injured by fireworks. Eye trauma can cause damage to the eyelids and ocular surface tissues, and can lead to burning, eye contusion or rupture, intraocular bleeding or foreign body residue, seriously affecting vision and may even require enucleation, and some will be co-infected or even life-threatening.
Director Wang Guohua reminded that most of the patients with eye trauma caused by fireworks and firecrackers are children and teenagers. Parents are advised to take good care of their children when setting off fireworks, especially not to allow young children to set off fireworks by themselves or near them. Once the eye area is injured by fireworks, do not rinse with water, because the water is easy to cause a chemical reaction of the substances in the firecracker, which will continue to cause chemical damage to the eyelids, and you must not rub the eyes with your hands, causing the wound to expand. The correct way is to use clean gauze or a clean towel to quickly cover the injured eye and take it to the hospital for treatment by an ophthalmologist.
