Marko: In our tests, we will test whether the concept of zero side boxes can be realized

Red Bull adviser Helmut Marko says the jury is still out on whether its Mercedes-style 'zero sidebox' solution will actually work in Formula 1.

Red Bull has unveiled a lot of changes to the RB20 car from last year, including the adoption of a similar concept to Mercedes' previous car design, including high grooves in the bonnet, and a minimalist sidebox with air intakes that even appear to be vertical.

This is reminiscent of last season's Mercedes' 'zero sidebox' layout, with some suggesting that Red Bull could be "more extreme" in their sidebox solutions in preparation for the cooler and cooler races at the start of the season.

Red Bull's decision to pursue a design idea similar to that of Mercedes sparked interest, but Marco also issued his own warning.

Mercedes was once also conquered by the zero-side box design concept, but this solution, while providing excellent performance data in wind tunnel testing, proved to be ineffective at all in practice. ”

We're going to put it into practice now and see if we can successfully implement a similar solution. ”

Marco added: "Nuvey has always favored the kind of cars that don't require the presence of a radiator, but obviously the employees in the engine department can't do that, and that's logical. ”

We weren't as extreme as Mercedes Design, but we were in a similar direction in terms of philosophy. It's not just an evolution, it's more like a small revolution. This will be the foundation of our 2024 season, and everything is working well in terms of simulation and wind tunnel. ”
