After returning to China, he was transferred to the North China Military Region as chief of staff and deputy commander, and then concurrently served as commander of the Beijing-Tianjin garrison, directly responsible for safeguarding the safety of the leader. In 1954, he was promoted to deputy chief of the general staff, and in 1955 he became the first commander of the Beijing Military Region, and continued to serve as deputy chief of the general staff.
In the years that followed, he participated in and commanded the Kinmen Artillery Battle, the self-defense counterattack against India, and the aid to Vietnam to resist the United States, defending national sovereignty. Until the "Yang Yufu Incident" in 1968, he had faithfully performed his duties.
