The statue of Jia Zhiyuan's wife Zhang Baozhu*, made in the sixth year (525) of Emperor Zhengguang of the Northern Wei Dynasty, was initiated by Jia Zhiyuan, a member of the local Jia clan, and his wife Zhang Baozhu, and other prominent officials such as "General" and "County Taishou" participated. It is one of the most exquisitely made stone carvings of the Northern Wei Dynasty in existence. This group of statues was discovered in 1918 in Wang Kongzhuang, Yidu (now Qingzhou), Shandong. Soon, it was purchased from the local area by the Japanese antique dealer Toyota Koji for 100,000 silver dollars and transported to Yidu Railway Station. After the liberation, the Cunyidu Cultural Center, which was moved to the Shandong Provincial Museum in 1953, is the treasure of the Shandong Provincial Museum.
The three statues of the Buddha on the back screen are the most popular system of Buddha statues in Shandong from the Northern Wei Dynasty to the Eastern Wei Dynasty. The skirt under the robe is in the shape of a figure-eight fishtail in many places, and the straight knife and oblique knife are mostly used in the carving, which makes the Shandong statue more simple and generous than the round and smooth of the Longmen statue in the overall style. As the earliest Buddha statue of the Northern Dynasty in the Zhengguang period in Qingzhou area, it is different from the long-necked and shaved shoulders and beautiful bones of Emperor Xuanwu of Longmen, the shape changes from excessive slenderness to moderate height and shortness, and the face shape changes from thin to square and round, showing new characteristics. The main Buddha statue surrounds the huge bas-relief backlight, the backlight is divided into two areas, the inner area is composed of the main body light and the head light, the head light from the inside to the outside for the opening lotus, the string stripe belt, the entwined branch lotus, the body light for the string stripe belt, and there is a bunch of lotus flowers on the left and right outwards. The outer area is carved with dense flame ground patterns, and the ground pattern is surrounded by nine-body Buddhas, and the outer area is surrounded by eleven flying statues. The flame pattern top carving is a sideways flying dragon, which is a stylistic feature of the appearance of statues from the late Northern Wei Dynasty to the early Eastern Wei Dynasty.
The main Buddha serves the Bodhisattva in two wakis, wearing a densely pleated long skirt, wrapped around the body, knotted in front of the chest, and standing on the lotus seat. The form of the Bodhisattva's V-shaped neckline showing two sides of the slope flat-necked underwear seems to be unique to Shandong, even in neighboring Hebei.
Between the Buddha statue and the Bodhisattva statue, the image of two donors is also depicted in a very shallow relief. Each of the two donors holds a lotus bud and bends down facing the Buddha statue, with great devotion.
There is a rectangular seat under the statue, and the front is engraved with the inscription of the main book: "The sixth year of the Great Wei Zhengguang (525) year old Yi Si April Yi Hai Shuo 19 days 癸巳, Qing believer Buddha ** Jia Zhiyuan wife Zhang Baozhu, etc., and for the seventh generation of parents, teachers, brothers, sisters, relatives, incense and incense, often with the Buddha, willing to make all sentient beings with the same blessing." The Jia family was a famous family in the Northern Dynasties, and the donation team of the statues was huge, and the activity funds were sufficient, so the three statues were large in size and exquisitely carved, far beyond the reach of ordinary statues, and were one of the most outstanding works of art in the Northern Wei Dynasty in Shandong. We can see that the Buddha at that time funded the creation of Buddha statues, and wished his relatives and all sentient beings to be blessed by the Buddha and Bodhisattva, the deceased to rest in peace, to be reborn in bliss, and to hear the Dharma in all lifetimes. In other words, making a Buddha statue is an act of cultivating a blessed field. This can also understand why the ancient Buddha statue art is so brilliant and vast.
There are 7 small niches arranged up and down on the left and right sides of the statue, and small Buddhas are carved in the niches. There are 13 columns of small Buddha carved on the back, 14 statues in each column, called "Thousand Buddha Figures", and there are 13 inscriptions on the side of the niches of 6 to 8 columns.
Rubbings In the early days of the discovery, there were a small number of rubbings of this statue, which were occasionally collected by public collection institutions such as Peking University Library and Fu Sinian Library in Taiwan, China, which were very rare. The heirloom rubbings are divided into two categories: the rubbings of the county officials and the rubbings of ordinary rubbings. The official extension is made on all sides, and the "Yidu County Seal" and "Yidu County Governor Fan Jiahu Seal" are added; There are no these two seals in the ordinary rubbing, and the Buddha statue opens its face to make a white face, and the Buddha statue of the official rubbing is made to make a "Lei Gong face", which highlights the style characteristics of the Buddha statue in this period of "thin bones and clear appearance", and the mallet extension process can be described as very wonderful. It was also found that in the sixth year of the year, Fan Jiahu was in office, and he left his post soon after for some reason, so it is known that this kind of official book is probably the initial rubbings at the beginning of the discovery of the statue.
