There are two cities named after Landsberg in Germany, one in Saxony-Anhalt and one in Bavaria. Therefore, in order to distinguish it, the southern Bavarian one is called Landsberg am Lacey. (landsberg am lech)
Landsberg was built because of salt and rich because of salt. The whole town is nestled on the banks of the River Lech, and because the banks of the river are very high, the buildings of the city are scattered. Its old town is beautiful and its monuments are well preserved. It is located on the Romantic Road, and according to big data from the German Meteorological Office, Landsberg am Lech is one of the sunniest cities in Germany.
However, what Landsberg is most famous for, and the last thing the townspeople want to mention, is that Adolf Hitler was imprisoned in Landsberg, where he wrote Mein Kampf and published his book. From 1937 to 1945 Landsberg was considered the third most important city by the Nazis after Munich and Nuremberg. However, all of the above is a thing of the past, and now the small town stands proudly in Bavaria with its beautiful scenery, attracting many tourists. Perhaps because of its proximity to Munich, I visited it in 2017 and then searched again for the first time in five years.
This is a map of Landsberg, from which you can see that the town is small and the attractions are concentrated, especially suitable for walking, basically a few minutes is an attraction.
Figure 1 in the map2.3 is the center of the town, surrounded by the majestic mansions of the city's nobility and the town hall, the fountain of Santa Maria, the lard tower.
schmalzturm , which directly translates to lard tower. Also known as the Beautiful Tower, it was the first city wall in Landsberg am Lech (early 14th century). Colourful roof tiles and storm bells bring the tower to life. It was given the nickname "schmalzturm" (lard) because in ancient times, on a clear day, the women of the market stood in the shade of the tower's gates with goods, including lard. In this way, the lard can be sold better by avoiding melting. The arch under the tower was the access to Munich at that time.
Building No. 5 is the Frauenkirche **, the main church in the town of Landsberg am Lech. The high nave, the onion-domed columns, and the windows in the church are among the few stained glass in Germany (15th-16th centuries).
Figure 13 is the Church of the Holy Cross, founded in 1752-54 and belonging to the Jesuit convent: located on a high point overlooking the town, the lavish Baroque and Rococo plaster decorations, frescoes, paintings are the main highlights of this church. The theme of the frescoes is particularly apt for the name of the church - the cross.
Bayertor Gate (1425): The most beautiful and largest gate in southern Germany in the late Gothic style (with a belvedere at 36 meters high) The Bayertor of Landsberg am Lech was built in 1425 as the end of the third ring of the city wall and the gateway to the east. It gets its name because it points in the direction of Bavaria, where Landsberg was once a border town between Bavaria and Swabia. Tickets are required for the observation deck, which is 3 euros.
Figure 20 (Herkomer-museum) Hercomer and Mother Tower. Hercomer (1849-1914) was born in the village of Waal in Bavaria, Germany, and moved to England when he was 10 years old. is a German-British painter, sculptor, director, filmmaker and writer. He is also considered one of the pioneers of German motorsport.
Herkomer often spent the summers in Germany, mainly in Landsberg am Lech, where her mother died in 1879, and in memory of his mother, Herkomer acquired a plot of land next to her parents' former home and began construction of a 30-meter-high tower, hence the name Mother Tower. The tower is an asymmetrical, five-story tuff ashlar building. Later, the tower was connected to his house by a closed covered bridge. Today, the old house houses the Hercomer Museum, which exhibits the artist's paintings.
Hercomer was married to his sister-in-law for the third time, and was forced to accept German citizenship and naturalize in Landsberg. Because this was forbidden by law in England at that time.
The red area of the small town on the map is the Lower Old Town, and the green area is the Upper Old Town. The upper area is elevated and overlooks the entire city. The Lower District is busy with business, shopping and dining are here. The blue zone is the walking trail around the city. If you have time, it's worth visiting. In addition, the Leahy River is a must-stop, there are many camera positions suitable for taking pictures.
The town is very small and belongs to niche attractions, but it can be said that although the sparrow is small, it has all kinds of organs, which is suitable for in-depth tours, and the attractions are concentrated, and the whole process can be measured on foot. River beaches, streams, churches, and hillsides echo each other, setting off each other, and every corner, every stop, and a glance back brings surprises. There is the precipitation of history, but also the wonder of nature, worthy of the title of romantic town.
Landsberg am Lech is a very small city with a small variety of restaurants, mainly pork chop and sausage burgers in German cuisine. One of the best reviews on the cat road is a German restaurant called Fischerwirt, which is located in the center of the city. It's best to make an appointment before you go, otherwise there is a good chance that there will be no space.
It is very convenient to get to Landsberg am Lech from Munich, which takes more than 40 minutes by Deutsche Bahn. In the middle of the kaufering there will be a turnaround. It is also about 40 minutes to drive on Highway 96 by car.
