Challenge: Glory days of struggle

In the long river of history, there is a remarkable Qing Dynasty minister, his name is Yishan. Yishan's family has a long history and carries the glory of Emperor Kangxi, but in his life, he has experienced ups and downs in the road of struggle.

Origins and frustrations

Yishan's great-grandfather was the fourteenth son of Emperor Kangxi, Yinyu, and Yishan's bloodline came from this prince. According to the inheritance regulations of the clan title, Yishan should inherit the illustrious title. However, fate was not very kind to him. Due to the disappearance of his father Mianbei when he was young, Yishan was forced to start from scratch without the glory he deserved.

The deep friendship between Yishan and Emperor Daoguang when he was a child became a help for his struggle. Although he lost the qualification for the title, due to his kinship with Emperor Daoguang, Yishan gradually embarked on the road of being a feudal official.

Coming to the fore

Yishan's family history can be described as long, and the ancestors have been in the picture for generations. However, Yishan's generation did not inherit his father's title, mainly because of the mysterious disappearance of Mianbei when he was young. Despite this dilemma, Yishan was not abandoned from the clan and was not removed from the Jade Butterfly, reserving opportunities for future generations.

If he had to set a beginning for Yishan's struggle, it should be at the age of 22, when he began to govern in the Daoguang Dynasty. The first third-class guard, although the official rank is only the fifth rank, this is his first step from scratch. Subsequently, he rose to prominence in officialdom, and at the age of 25, he was promoted to the rank of second-class guard, with the rank of fourth-class.

Exploits and style

The turning point of fate came in 1828, when a civil rebellion broke out, and Yishan actively responded to the call to join the battle. On the battlefield, he performed well and killed the enemy bravely. After his triumphant return, Emperor Daoguang specially rewarded Yishan with the position of first-class guard, which was a recognition of his strength, not a favoritism of blood.

From the 10th year of Daoguang to the 20th year of Daoguang, the Yishan officialdom rose rapidly, and successively served as the secretary of the Yili Armament Academy, the secretary of the armed forces, and the minister of the Ili team. He established a prominent position in the imperial court, showing his political talent and military demeanor.

Diplomatic turmoil and controversy

In 1840, the Opium War broke out, and Yishan was appointed as the general of Jingrefu. However, during the fight against the British in Guangdong, he had a disagreement with the anti-smoking minister Lin Zexu and failed to adopt the correct strategy, resulting in defeat. Despite this, Yishan later signed the Treaty of Canton with Britain on behalf of the Qing court, and signed agreements such as the Sino-Russian Ili Tarbahatai Trade Charter.

However, the reason why Yishan was controversial and criticized was because during his tenure as general of Ili in the Xianfeng Dynasty, he signed the "Aihui Treaty" with Tsarist Russia without authorization. This treaty, which was not agreed to by the Qing court and included a large territorial cession, aroused strong resentment and controversy from the imperial court.

Glory in old age

In 1862, Yishan was already over seventy years old, but he was awarded the title of the chief patriarch of the red flag, which was a very lofty position. Two years later, he ushered in his long-lost knighthood and was promoted to the rank of first-class general of Zhenguo. For Yishan, this glory may be the pinnacle of more than 70 years of struggle.

At the age of 75, Yishan was still active in the imperial court, serving as the prime minister, the minister of military parades, the minister of the white flag guard, and the Mongolian capital of the red flag. Although he was a member of the clan, he was far away from the royal bloodline, but he gained a prominent position among the three dynasties of Daoguang, Xianfeng, and Tongzhi, and won a new honor for Yinyu in the clan.

Yishan's life is a glorious time of struggle, starting from scratch, with his own wisdom and courage, to create a legend of his own.
