Amorphous a-olefin copolymer, commonly known as APAO (Amorphous Poly Alpha Olefin), is a random copolymer obtained by polymerization of A-olefins (such as ethylene, propylene, 1-butene, etc.), which belongs to a plastic material. Due to its low molecular weight and high degree of randomness, APAO can exhibit some of the different properties of isometric polyolefins and is suitable for different applications. APAO has the characteristics of high temperature stability, stable molecular structure and high fluidity, and is widely used in wire and cable, asphalt modifier, hot melt adhesive, filler masterbatch and other fields.

At present, there are the following companies in the world that produce APAO products: Evonik in Germany, Eastman in the United States, Rextac in the United States, and Liaoyang Liaohua Qida Chemical Co., Ltd. in China. Among them, the first three companies started to produce APAO earlier, in the 80s of the last century, and are currently larger, but the price of their products is higher. After breaking through this technology in 2002, Qida Chemical in China has produced APAO on a large scale, and the index range basically covers foreign key brands, with stable product quality and high cost performance. At present, Qida Chemical is the only APAO manufacturer in China and Asia.

The main production processes of APAO include solution polymerization, batch or continuous slurry method, etc. Solution polymerization method refers to the polymerization of liquid propylene under high pressure, and finally produces APAO; The slurry method uses solvent oil, naphtha, gasoline, etc. as solvents, and adds gaseous propylene phase reaction to finally prepare APAO. At present, the continuous slurry method is the mainstream production process of APAO, which has the advantages of high production efficiency, good quality and performance of finished products, and is suitable for large-scale production.
