Can calcium oxide be transported as general cargo?

Recently,Compliance interactive columnReceived an inquiry from a company about whether calcium oxide can be transported according to general cargo. In this issue, we will share our technology on the transportation requirements of calcium oxide.

1. Introduction to calcium oxide

Calcium oxide, commonly known as quicklime, is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula CAO, the appearance is white powder, the impure one is gray-white, and it is pale yellow or gray when it contains impurities.

Calcium oxide is a basic oxide that is sensitive to moisture. It easily absorbs carbon dioxide and moisture from the air. It can undergo exothermic reaction with water to form calcium hydroxide, commonly known as hydrated lime.

2. Classification of calcium oxide transportation hazards

In the United Nations TDG regulations, calcium oxide belongs to the listed category 8 corrosiveness, and the specific transportation information is shown in the figure below.

As shown in Figure 2, calcium oxide is classified as UN1910, Packing Group III, but there is a special provision to be noted".", which clearly stipulates that dangerous goods are only classified as dangerous goods when transported by air.

Moreover, in the IMDG Code regulations for maritime transportation, UN1910 has a special provision "960" specific to maritime transportation, which also emphasizes that calcium oxide is not restricted by regulations when shipping by sea.

In the case of domestic road transport, according to JT T6173-2018, calcium oxide is also not subject to any restrictions of the standard, according to the general cargo transportation.
