In the latest urban GDP rankings for 2023, we see a whole new landscape. The ranking of the four first-tier cities of Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen has been changed to Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou, demonstrating the rapid changes and vitality of China's urban economy.
Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou, as traditional economic powerhouses, are still in the top three, but Shenzhen has surpassed Guangzhou to take second place with its strong technology industry and innovation capabilities. This change not only reflects the speed of Shenzhen's economic development, but also shows the coexistence of competition and cooperation between Chinese cities.
At the same time, Hong Kong, while still having a strong economy, ranks only sixth in terms of GDP, and its future development faces competition from mainland cities. As a representative of the central and western regions, Chongqing has not yet surpassed Hong Kong, although its economic growth has been rapid in recent years. As an emerging economic powerhouse, Suzhou's GDP is already close to that of Hong Kong, and it is expected to further surpass it in the future.
In the western region, Chengdu's development is remarkable. In the early years, Chengdu was on par with cities such as Dalian and Xi'an, but now it has jumped significantly in the rankings, beating cities such as Hangzhou, Wuhan, Nanjing and Tianjin. This shows Chengdu's economic leading role and future development potential in the western region.
At the prefecture-level city level, some cities have also performed very well. In addition to Suzhou, which already has a high GDP, cities such as Wuxi, Foshan, Quanzhou, Nantong, Dongguan and Yantai have strong economic development momentum, becoming the best among prefecture-level cities.
It is worth mentioning that Taipei and New Taipei, as important cities in Taiwan, have also entered the top 30 in terms of GDP, surpassing Xiamen on the other side of the strait and Shenyang, Dalian, Changchun and Harbin in the northeast. This shows the important position of the Taiwan region in China's economy and its future development potential.
