The Google Gemini Nano model will support the MediaTek chipset, the first to support mid range phone

MediaTek announced that two new chipsets will support Google's mobile platform, the AI model Gemini Nano.

The Dimensity 8300 and 9300 SoCs are mobile platforms launched by MediaTek last year, and the two companies have integrated and optimized the Google Gemini Nano to run on the MediaTek Dimensity 8300 and 9300 chipsets. The collaboration includes Google's use of Neuropilot, MediaTek's AI development toolset, to run the Gemini Nano on the MediaTek APU to boost performance. The two companies also plan to release the Dimensity 8300 and 9300 APKs so that developers and mobile phone brands can deploy Gemini Nano applications.

The Gemini Nano is the smallest of the Gemini models announced by Google last year, and is specifically performed on mobile platforms such as mobile phones. Previously, only flagship models were able to run the nano, including the Google Pixel 8 Pro, and the Samsung Galaxy S24 series, which was only announced in January this year.

The cooperation with MediaTek means that the Gemini Nano will soon be available on mid-range mobile phones. Google has said that the flagship chipsets of Qualcomm, MediaTek, and Samsung will all support Nano. The MediaTek Dimensity 8300 is the first silicon platform designed for mid-range models. On the other hand, while the Dimensity 8300 can support large language models, Google doesn't provide how much token rate the chipset supports, so it can be expected that performing multiple AI functions will slow down the phone's performance.

According to Android Authority, the only phone currently equipped with MediaTek Dimensity 8300 is the Poco X6 Pro. However, Google is expected to continue to expand the number of mid-range phone partners that support Gemini Nano.
