There are new movies coming out in the new year, and 2024 will be another year for action movies to shine. There are many highly anticipated sequels on the horizon, as well as some very noteworthy original projects on the horizon. Action movie fans may not be as careless as they were in the '80s, but action movies are still the mainstream of cinema. Here are the top 10 most anticipated Hollywood action movies of the year.
Following the masterpiece Dune, which was nominated for Best Picture, Dune 2 will pick up where the previous one left off. Director Denis Villeneuve has been very faithful to the original book when adapting it, and he is also committed to dedicating every penny of his budget to creating a completely immersive world. The second installment will be even more thrilling than the first, as Paul Atreides will gather the Fremen to fight the Harkonnen family and reclaim his homeland. Godzilla and King Kong have finally been freed, and in Godzilla vs. Kong 2, it seems that they are going to join forces to deal with a new threat. "Godzilla vs. Kong" director Adam Weingard returns to continue directing the sequel, and Dan Stevens will star alongside some of the actors who participated in the previous film. Whatever forced these two behemoths to work together again must be a considerable threat.
Alex Garland has spent a lot of time working on sci-fi (and making some critically acclaimed sci-fi films), and in Civil War, it seems like we're going to see the director take a more down-to-earth, realistic look at what the future might look like. The film is set in the United States in the near future, imagining a civil war breaking out between some of the states and other regions that have broken away within this country. Starring Kirsten Dunst, the film looks packed with action elements and is still a must-see of the year, despite the fact that the subject matter seems too realistic.
Stunt Maniac is one of the few action-comedy blockbusters of the year, starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt as a pair of stuntmen and directors who are working together on a movie. Gosling's character works part-time as a bounty hunter, and the two begin an ambiguous relationship that could have serious consequences. With David Leich, the director of "Deadpool 2" and "Freezing City", the action scenes of "Stunt Maniac" should be fascinating. I hope the jokes are just as exciting.
It is foreseeable that May 24 will be the most crowded weekend in the summer season, and the first part of the new trilogy of "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" will be released on that day. The Rise of the Planet of the Apes trilogy has been critically acclaimed, and it seems that the new trilogy will pick up on the legacy years after the previous one. In this new sequel, although the situation has not yet developed to the level of the old 1968 version of Planet of the Apes, apes have established a more advanced society, and humans are no longer able to speak. The first trailer leaves us with a lot of room for imagination, and as one of the most classic film franchises in film history, this new chapter should not disappoint us. 
By the time Mad Max: Fury Goddess was released, it had been almost a full decade since Mad Max: Fury Road shocked everyone. This prequel will tell the story of Charlize Theron's character, Forriosa, before he meets Max. While many details of the new film remain under wraps, the first trailer shows us that the iconic raging desert and stunning visuals of the previous one will be recreated. Even if it's only half as good as Fury Road in the end, it will be one of the best movies of the year.
The story of The Rush may be over, but there are many more stories to be told in the world of The Rush. Ballerina is a spin-off film from the Rundown series, set in a Russian dance school briefly introduced in Rundown 3. Starring Ana de Armas plays one of the killers who trained at that school, and although there are few details at the moment, we already know that Keanu Reeves will at least make a brief appearance in the film. The film is set between the third and fourth installments, so there may be other familiar faces as well.
Jedi Men 3 was one of the few films to hit big in 2020, and four years later, the old boy is back. We don't know much about this sequel at the moment, but as long as Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are in the role, the film is definitely worth watching. Although Will Smith's career was greatly affected after the Oscar beating turmoil, it is believed that fans of the series will still flock to the film when it is released.
Zheng Yishuo directed a very profound film "Minari" in 2020, and you might think that it wasn't enough to qualify him for a sequel to "Tornado", but let's take a look first. Starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glenn Powell in 2024, Tornado is being promoted as a new chapter in the series, and while it's unclear how its plot ties to the original Tornado from the 90s, it is reported that it will tell the story of a group of storm chasers. Of course, we know that the film mainly relies on the charm and special effects of Edgar Jones and Powell, and just like the old version, the plot is really irrelevant.
After starring in Ridley Scott's Gladiator 2, Paul Mescar's stardom may be elevated to a whole new level. The details of the project remain largely under wraps, but Mescal seems the perfect person to succeed Russell Crow. It remains to be seen if the film is connected to the first installment, or if it is simply set in the same universe. What we can be sure of is that if Ridley were to make another Gladiator movie, we should expect it to arrive.
