Interns and residents at five major hospitals in the metropolitan area of South Korea have decided to resign en masse and expand their medical school enrollment.
The Korea Intern Resident Council announced on Friday (February 16) that after discussions with representatives of doctors from the five major hospitals, it was decided that all interns and residents in each hospital will submit their resignation letters by the 19th and will suspend work from 6 am on the 20th.
The five major hospitals in the metropolitan area of Korea are Seoul National University Hospital, Yonsei University Severance Hospital, Samsung Seoul Hospital, Seoul Asan Hospital, and Seoul St. Mary's Hospital. Interns and residents are the main force on duty in the emergency department, and their collective resignation will inevitably create medical vacancies, which can cause great inconvenience to patients.
South Korea** has indicated that it will severely punish the collective action of the medical profession, including the revocation of doctors' licenses. Therefore, if doctors actually take collective action, the conflict between the medical profession and ** will be further intensified.
South Korea's Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Ministry of Education announced on the 6th of this month that the number of new medical students will be expanded from the current 3,058 to 5,058 starting from the 2025 college entrance examination, an increase of about 65%. *Quotas for medical schools will be released at the end of this month, or at the latest next month.
South Korea's medical community has accused South Korea's ** expansion plan as a "hasty unilateral decision", arguing that there are already enough medical staff in South Korea and that existing doctors should be paid more.
