3. Chengdu zombies.
In the early days of Chengdu's Funan River reconstruction, there were several high-profile jumping incidents. Although the river was not deep and the speed was not fast, some people drowned accidentally. For a time, rumors about zombie infestation in Funan River were rampant, but then the rumors were refuted by TV stations.
According to internal sources, the cause of death of these drowning people was not drowning. When they were salvaged ashore, they all had severe burn marks, apparently from flames. The authorities investigated the matter, but they were unable to find conclusive evidence, and finally had to give up.
In 1995, the post-80s generation in Chengdu may still remember that there was a story about zombies circulating on campus. It is said that the Chengdu archaeological team found three ancient corpses of the Qing Dynasty near the Wuhou Temple, but due to negligence in management, these three ancient corpses disappeared mysteriously overnight. Subsequently, five more zombies appeared, which specialized in biting people's heads, and those who were bitten but did not die also turned into zombies. In response to this crisis, the military even dispatched flamethrowers to eliminate these zombies. Another theory is that these zombies were dug up from the Jiulao Cave in Qingcheng Mountain, or from places such as Qixian and Shiling. In order to deal with these zombies, the military also used laser troops, which cost a lot to finally solve them.
However, according to the rumors circulating within the Chengdu Military Region, between 1995 and 1997, there were no zombies in Chengdu at all, and everything was rumors and misunderstandings.
The truth of the matter is this: a family surnamed Lin in Ping'an Township, Longquanyi, their wolf dog contracted rabies and bit the family's pig to death. The male owner of the Lin family brought the pig that the dog had bitten to death and brought it to the whole family to eat. That night, the whole family had symptoms, the whole body was hot, **red, and bitten when they saw someone, including two children and an elderly man. The next day, accompanied by relatives and neighbors, they came to Chengdu to see a doctor. When passing through Hejiang Pavilion, the people of the Lin family fell ill and bit people again, resulting in many injuries. At first, the person who was bitten was unaware that the condition was contagious, and as a result, some of the infected people died, and some continued to bite people to spread the virus. Eventually, Longquanyi found several corpses that had been bitten to death, which were rumored to be zombies sucking blood, and the matter was reported to the Business Daily.
The Hejiang Pavilion biting incident is also rumored to be the appearance of zombies in the Nanhe River in Chengdu, which has attracted widespread attention. Because the sick man was cold and thickly dressed, he was also misrepresented as a Qing Dynasty zombie. The news spread quickly, and the citizens of Chengdu were panicked. In order to deal with this crisis, the Chengdu Military Region dispatched a large number of personnel to deal with it, and finally gradually calmed down the panic.
It was later found out that this disease was actually a disease caused by a mad pig, which was called "mad pig disease" by the locals. In 2005, another outbreak of swine streptococcal disease in Sichuan also caused a lot of panic. In order to prevent the spread of the disease, multiple checkpoints have been set up in the surrounding areas of Chengdu to prohibit pork and people from unknown sources from entering the city. Once an abnormal situation is found in a pig farmer, the army will immediately isolate it.
