The Knesset voted overwhelmingly to support Prime Minister Netanyahu's proposal to oppose any unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state.

The Knesset on Wednesday (February 21) voted 99 in favor and nine against to approve Netanyahu's proposal.

A few days before the vote, the Washington Post reported that Biden and several Arab countries in the United States were working on a comprehensive plan for a long-term peace between Israel and Palestine. This includes a clear timetable for the establishment of a Palestinian state, the report said. The draft plan, quoted by participants as being provided by Wall Street, said that Israel would halt all military operations in the Gaza Strip for six weeks, and that the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) would then implement the hostage release arrangements in three phases.

Netanyahu wrote on the social media platform X that the vote sent a "strong message" to the international community.

Quoting the statement of Palestine***, it was said that this was Israel's insistence on challenging the international community, and that the full membership of the State of Palestine in the United Nations and its recognition by States did not require Israel's ratification. Palestine calls for Israel's recognition of the State of Palestine in accordance with international law, the implementation of the two-state solution, and the assurance of the success of future negotiations.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken stressed the need for an independent Palestinian state during a panel discussion at the annual Munich Security Conference last Saturday (17 February). He noted that the coming months are a "golden opportunity" for Israel to normalize relations with its Arab neighbors. Reuters quoted him as saying: "Almost every Arab country now sincerely wants to integrate Israel into the region, normalizing relations ......."Provide security commitments and assurances to make Israel feel safer. ”
