Swiss Re has created a chart that highlights the dramatic changes that have taken place in the world's maritime landscape in recent years. The Red Sea, the Black Sea, the Panama Canal, and several rivers are all facing disruptions to shipping. In a new report titled "Disruption of Navigation: Signs of Rough Waves Ahead", Swiss Re noted: "Shortly after the severe disruptions caused by the pandemic, the pressure on global routes is once again putting pressure on the global ** chain.

On February 14, Clean Shipping Group CMBTech announced that it has partnered with Yara and its subsidiaries Yara Clean Ammonia (YCA) and North Sea Container Line (NCL) to order the world's first ammonia-powered 1400TEU ice-class container vessel "Yara Eyde" in Qingdao, which is expected to be delivered in mid-2026 and will serve the route between Norway and Germany.

The Red Sea crisis has caused sea freight rates from the Far East to the U.S. to soar by more than 150%, but shippers seem to be on the verge of breathing a sigh of relief. The latest data released by Xeneta shows that spot rates from the Far East to the United States have fallen slightly since the last round of comprehensive interest rate hikes (GRIs) were implemented in early February and may have peaked. Rates on the U.S. East Coast have dropped slightly from $6,260 per FEU (40-foot container) on Feb. 1 to $6,100 on Feb. 15. During the same period, the West Coast rate dropped from $4730 per FEU to $4680.

As of 1:30 a.m. local time on February 16, all 11 crew members, including two South Koreans, three Indonesians and six Burmese, had been rescued.
