The United States is the origin of semiconductors, but it has lost the core advantages of the chip manufacturing industry, more and more chip manufacturing orders are placed in Asian factories to manufacture, the United States chip manufacturing economy has suffered a large loss, and the production capacity has lived up to its glory.
The United States, which is trying to change all this, enacted the "CHIPS Act" to come up with $52 billion in subsidies. Now that the biggest beneficiary of chip subsidies in the United States has appeared, TSMC is busy in vain?
The United States has many of the world's leading chip design and manufacturing companies, such as Intel, Qualcomm, Micron Technology, etc., which have rich experience and leading positions in chip technology research and development. Moreover, the United States has a complete chip industry chain, with relatively mature enterprises and technical support from design, manufacturing to packaging and testing, forming a complete industrial ecosystem.
But don't look at the strength of the U.S. semiconductor industry, in fact, there is also an unknown side. That is, the United States is extremely dependent on third-party foundry, almost all high-end chips in the United States are entrusted to TSMC, Samsung manufacturing, and even some of Intel's high-end chips need to find TSMC foundry cooperation.
In other words, the high-end chips designed by the United States itself cannot be made, and if this continues, the United States will inevitably lose the right to speak in the chip manufacturing industry. So the United States enacted the "CHIPS Act", planning to come up with $52 billion in subsidies, as long as manufacturers build factories in the United States, there is hope to receive subsidies.
TSMC has also been attracted to build factories in the United States, setting an investment target of $40 billion. However, the biggest beneficiary of chip subsidies is not TSMC, but Intel. According to a report by Bloomberg, Intel is seeking more than $10 billion in subsidies, and the company will become the biggest beneficiary of the chip subsidy bill.
It would not be surprising if Intel got this money, Intel is a native of the United States, and it is also the hope of the United States to participate in the global chip manufacturing competition, and it is also the hole card to reduce its dependence on TSMC's chip foundry. Coupled with Intel's preparation of $20 billion in factory investment, there is no reason for the United States to snub Intel.
In terms of the scale of investment in building factories, TSMC has set an investment target of $40 billion to build factories in the United States, far exceeding Intel's $20 billion. In terms of technology, TSMC has mastered the world's most advanced chip manufacturing process, and will build two high-end chip factories of 4nm and 3nm in the United States.
No matter how you look at it, TSMC has more advantages in obtaining large subsidies from the United States, but in the current situation, TSMC is going to work in vain, and the United States is clearly biased towards its own people and can only use TSMC.
After so many years of building a factory in the United States, there is no trace of the subsidies that TSMC wants, and the United States has repeatedly made unreasonable demands to let TSMC hand over the data.
The people on the island are worried that TSMC will one day become "American Semiconductor Company", which will be hollowed out by the United States, and talents and technologies will be poached by the United States, and it will be too late for TSMC to regret it.
So it's time for TSMC to recognize the reality, the United States does not regard him as its own, if you want to avoid being led by the nose by the United States, the best thing to do is to take more advanced chip manufacturing technology into your own hands and keep the necessary hole cards, so that you can control your own destiny.
