Global auto trade network information, according to Bloomberg,Apple recently welcomed another executive departure, and DJ Nonotney, a senior vice president of hardware engineering, is leaving to join American electric vehicle maker Rivian Automotive Inc. on Monday. Nonotney has been with Apple for nearly 25 years and is a veteran of Apple, leading home device projects and helping to launch Apple's electric vehicle development.
Automotive News).
DJ Nonotney, Apple's vice president of hardware engineering, informed his colleagues of his imminent departure on Friday, according to people familiar with the matter. DJ Nonotney will join electric SUV and truck maker Rivian on Monday as senior vice president of automotive projects and report directly to CEO RJ Scaringe, people familiar with the matter said. The individuals requested anonymity due to their involvement in matters that had not yet been announced.
Novotney has worked at Apple for nearly 25 years and is considered a key assistant to many of Apple's top hardware engineering executives. According to people familiar with the matter, he played a key role in the development of multiple generations of iPods and iPhones, and was selected by Dan Riccio, Apple's former head of hardware, to lead the development of the iPad.
Building great products is what we do best, and I'm very fortunate to be part of an amazing team that has worked on iPods, iPhones, iPads, Watches, and more," Novotney wrote in a memo to colleagues. ”
Nonotney also helped drive the launch of the Apple Watch, having been brought to work by Apple's chief operating officer Jeff Williams and former chief designer Jony Ive. About a decade ago, Nonotney was one of the few executives selected to launch Apple's electric car development program, codenamed "Titan."
A few years ago, after a restructuring after a sustained setback in the automotive project, Nonotney shifted his role to a senior executive in charge of developing the home devices of the future, including some products in the field of robotics and artificial intelligence. Apple has reportedly been exploring a HomePod with a display that can be rotated by a robotic arm.
Rivian views the hiring as a major victory.
Nonotney, who will begin his tenure at Rivian on Monday, will be one of about 12 senior vice presidents. In his new role, he will be responsible for product management for product and engineering, making him one of the company's most critical executives.
Rivian's CEO, Scaringe, took over as head of product following the departure of Nick Kalayjian, a former executive in charge of development, as reported by Bloomberg in November. Kalayjian is leaving his post this year, while Nonotney will take on many of his responsibilities.
Spokespeople for Apple and Rivian declined to comment. Novotney did not respond to a request for comment.
For Apple, the move marks another change at the top. Tang Tan, Apple's vice president of product design for iPhone and Apple Watch, will leave next month to join IVE's design company, LoveFrom. Steve Hotelling, head of hardware technology, also left at the end of last year. Over the course of 2022 and 2023, Apple lost many other executives in hardware, operations, and services.
Rivian, based in Irvine, California, has long been seen as a leading electric vehicle startup, a major contender for the few chasing market leader Tesla Inc. It produces two consumer models – a battery-electric pickup truck and an SUV called the R1T and R1S. The company also builds an electric van for Amazon and recently announced that it has been granted the exclusive right to sell the last-mile product to other companies.
