From the 26th to the 27th of this month, a new round of "Wang Sha Meeting" was held in Bangkok, Thailand, where Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China and director of the Foreign Affairs Office, met with Sullivan, assistant for affairs of the United States, and exchanged views on a number of topics. This is the third "Wangsha Meeting" held in recent years, the last time was in September last year, Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Sullivan held strategic communication in Malta, and held 12-hour talks on China-US relations, the Taiwan issue, the Ukraine crisis and other issues. This "Wang Sha Meeting" is roughly the same as the previous two times, and the topic is still these clichés, but from the announcement, there are still a few unusual details.
The first detail is that the communication between China and the United States is very urgent, and according to the usual practice, the "Wang Sha meeting" is usually held in a third country, but before the meeting, Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Sullivan will first complete their respective visit agendas before meeting. However, this time in Thailand, the two sides did not arrange the visit schedule, but held the meeting as soon as they landed. This shows that both sides are eager to enter the communication phase so as not to get into trouble. The sooner the meeting begins, the easier it will be to communicate and reach consensus.
The second detail is that the "Wang Sha Meeting" is set in Southeast Asia, and the previous Sino-US strategic communication will be set in European countries, which can show strategic balance in the senses and be fair to both sides, such as Vienna and Malta. But this time, the meeting between Wang and Sha took place in Thailand, which is at China's doorstep. Thailand is a Southeast Asian country, and in recent years, it has been very close to China, often purchasing China's best equipment, and has also carried out joint exercises with China many times, and held a Sino-US strategic communication meeting in Thailand, which is obviously beneficial to China. During the talks, China and the United States also reached some strategic consensusDuring the talks, the Chinese side emphasized its strategic expectations for the future development of China-US relations and clearly expressed its firm position on the Taiwan issue. China*** has made it clear that the heads of state of China and the United States will maintain regular contacts and provide strategic guidance for bilateral relations. China pointed out that major issues in Sino-US relations with the Taiwan Strait as the core are the priority content of the talks. In the discussions on the Taiwan issue, the Chinese side reaffirmed the importance of the one-China principle and its opposition to any form of action.
In addition, China also mentioned that it hopes to establish a dialogue mechanism with the United States to effectively manage and control differences between the two sides on sensitive issues and avoid accidents. The United States, for its part, has focused on a number of regional hotspot issues, including the situation in the Red Sea region. Adviser Jake Sullivan is ready to hold in-depth discussions with the Chinese side on the security environment in the Red Sea, and hopes that China can use its relationship with Iran to exert influence on the Houthis, according to the United States. Apparently, the United States believes that China has influence in the region and can play an active role in resolving conflicts. In the briefings after the meeting, both China and the United States expressed positive comments on the outcome of the talks. The two sides believe that direct dialogue will help to set a clearer framework for resolving bilateral issues and pave the way for future communication. However, how to operate these consensuses still needs to be gradually implemented by the two sides in subsequent interactions.
On the whole, the Sino-US strategic communication was relatively successful. China has sent an important message to the United States, that is, the United States must abide by the "one-China principle" and not only in foreign policy, but more importantly, in practical actions. I believe that China's intentions have been clearly expressed that China is willing to maintain open strategic communication channels with the United States, negotiate openly and honestly, and work side by side with the United States to resolve major international affairs and maintain regional peace and stability.
