Recently, reports about the sales record of Huawei's Mate 60 series have caused a stir. In just five months or so, the phone has surpassed all previous Mate series sales to become the best-selling Huawei phone of all time.
This news quickly spread on the Internet, and many netizens said that the mate60 has been difficult to find and is out of stock all year round. Some have even begun to speculate whether it will be able to surpass the sales of the iPhone 15 if it is not insufficient?
However, how many units do you need to sell to achieve the highest sales ever? This question is actually quite easy to calculate.
Among Huawei's Mate series of mobile phones, the highest-selling is the Mate40 series, which was released on October 22, 2020, and is equipped with the first 5nm chip Kirin 9000 series. It is worth mentioning that since then, Huawei's flagship mobile phones have not supported 5G functions for the time being, making the Mate40 a generation of god machines, and the final sales have reached more than 32 million units.
Is it possible that the Mate 60 will necessarily need to sell more than 32 million units if it is to surpass this record?
According to the data of the fourth quarter of 2023, regardless of the statistics of which agency, Huawei's sales in the domestic market are about 11 million units, and multiple institutions have provided similar data, so this figure can be considered accurate. In addition, Huawei's sales are mainly concentrated in the domestic market, because the Mate60 series is only sold in China, and the sales volume in overseas markets is negligible.
However, these 11 million units sold include the Nova series, as well as the previous Mate and P series, not just the Mate 60 series. Even if we assume that all these sales come from the Mate60 series, there are only 11 million units.
From its release at the end of August to the present, the Mate 60 series has only been sold for about 5 months, of which the sales time of the 4th quarter has not been counted. In the best case, if we assume that the sales in this month are half of the sales in the fourth quarter, then Huawei's total sales could reach around 16 million units. But how many of them are sold in the Mate60 series? Maybe % or even 100%?
Even if we assume that the Mate 60 series accounts for all sales, it is far from the record of 32 million units, or even less than half. Such an exaggerated sales figure can call into question its authenticity and may ultimately have a negative impact on the brand image.
Overall, while it's common to exaggerate sales figures, clever claims should avoid making people feel like they're wrong, so as not to undermine brand credibility and consumer trust. This kind of low-level exaggerated propaganda can cause consumer disgust and ultimately backfire.
